Where did you all get your chalkboards at. I am trying to find one.

we love using a personal-sized white board (we jokingly refer to it as our modern day hornbook). I don't like the sound of a squeaky piece of chalk, nor the breakage, nor the dust. This is just another idea, in case you're not set on a chalkboard.

I couldn't find any the size that I wanted (I have 2 boards that are 4 X 8 ft each). I ended up buying them through a supplier off ebay...even got free shipping. They were very expensive though.

I use dust free chalk by Prang, and chalk holders so no breakage.

Ours is a magnetic chalkboard that I painted on the wall. Several layers of magnetic paint then 2 layers of chalkboard paint. The kids love it, I enjoy it for school but in hindsight would have used a whiteboard. The chalk dust is making me nuts!!

I could really go either way. The chalk can be messy but the dry erase pens can give me a headache. I just need a good size board (4x6 would be great.)

I had a whiteboard last year and hated it because of the smell, things ghosting, and if my kid get marker on their clothes it just doesn't come out.

I use a chalkholder and dustless chalk. No problems here.

I just bought a 3' X 5' board from the above store and it's not a slate board, but it is working really well and was about $140 after the shipping was figured in. I bought the Valu-Rite one and as I said it's not a great as a porcelain or slate but it works really well for us. and the price was very reasonable.

We got one for free because the school district was changing their chalk boards to white boards a few years back.

Where do you find dustless chalk? We just found a large chalkboard in my dad's attic, but chalk dust makes me sneeze. I agree with you about the whiteboard though. The ghosting is so annoying.

I bought some at a teachers supply store around here. I think. It's been a while.

It's not completely Dustless but it is much less dust than traditional chalk.

we made our own black board out of a basketball backboard. we just painted it with blackboard paint.:001_smile: I would like an easel for it though. I have it sitting on an old wooden chair, tied on with string.:)

We have chalkboard paint and I'm going to paint it on 4'x8' MDF boards from the hardware store. I want to be able to lean it against the wall, mount it, or use it on the floor depending on the age of the kids using it.

It covers 100sf so I could probably paint a few (even cut down 1/4" thick sheets into small sizes) then make custom templets by adding colorful glossy paint to parts for writing lines, graphs/grids, games, etc. I have dustless chalk coming from Rainbow Resource this week.

we have made ours, we bought a piece of mdf and painted it with black board paint, and it has worked brilliant.:D
