Does anyone have a dc crazy about baseball? Can you recommend some good titles for a 3rd grader?

Fiction, non-fiction, it's all good. Can be an independent read or a read-aloud, up to an easy-ish adult level.

Any recommendations?

Not a book, but a baseball nut in our family loved Sports Illustrated for Kids. He devoured every page.

Follow my Leader is one I thought of. It's not about baseball persay but if your ready to make a stretch it is good literature.

:iagree:

Also, Dean Hughes has a 9 book series called The Scrappers. It is wonderful - great morals without being preachy.

ETA: Each book focuses on one of the kids and the position they play. Each child has their own struggle to overcome and each position is explained along with tips for playing that position.

or something like that. I think the author is Dan Gutman. I know a couple of the titles are Babe and Me and Jackie and Me. Basically a kid travels back in time and gets involved with baseball greats. My kids really enjoyed them.

There are also a couple by Mike Lupica. I wouldn't necessarily recommend them. They are a little too "modern" for my endorsement but my 10 yo has read and enjoyed them. There is one call Heat.

Matt Christopher books have also been very popular.

Good Luck.

There are 2 more books available in the series and Bildner has a few other baseball books as well.

That's an excellent idea! I never would have thought of that. I'll check our library this week. If it's a hit, aK SI for Kids subscription would be a neat Christmans present.:001_smile:

Thanks a lot!

I'm so glad you mentioned that! I hadn't heard of Matt Christopher, but your post prompted me to go hunt down the book ds read a few weeks ago. Yes! It's by Matt Christopher and there's a list of a bunch of his sports books. I had no idea. I've been busy lately and hadn't thought to check on this.

Thanks so much! I will go the library to look for more of his titles.

The Matt Christopher book he recently finished was his first independently-read chapter book. He devoured it in a day, staying up really late to finish it even! M.C. must be pretty interesting for ds to do that! He usually likes to play outside, whacking balls and digging in the dirt instead of reading.

I was so amazed when he read the book; I cried a little with joy. It was just a book I had gotten from the Goodwill ages ago. He picked it off the shelf and couldn't stop.

A few days ago I asked him if there was anything special he'd like to study or read about in homeschool and he said "baseball."

i thought, "better go to the hive and ask for some ideas!"

Thanks :001_smile:

That's interesting. I asw this in the SL catalog and have been wanting to make this one of our read-alouds. I didn't know there was a baseball element in it! I'll have to move that one to the top of our RA list.

Thanks for the great idea! It has a guide dog in it, too, right? My dd will like it, too, then.:)

Much appreciation for the suggestion!

Now *that* is a good idea! Thanks so much. I think we'll enjoy reading this one aloud together! I had forgotten about that poem.

The first item on our memory work list this year???:001_smile:

and "Home Run: the Story of Babe Ruth"

There are probably lots of biographies for children slightly older, too.
