I am thinking starting Spanish in 2nd grade and keep going until 5th grade, then add in French. They have 6 years worth of Spanish available already. Then we can switch to a traditional grammar study of the language. Thoughts??

someone there used in hs for several years.
We haven't gotten past level 1 with older ds although we do have Learnables French level 1 & 2. Hopefully next ds will get to level 2 before high school; then in high school they will use Glencoe French at their private school.

Thank you for responding. So if I get Learnables 1 & 2, start them in 2nd.... how long will it take us? Does it get too advanced to buy a new program every year? Will I want to go over the same level several years for review?
Congratulatoins on your oldest starting in the Private HS. You must be so proud!

He's never attended school before except for band.
Learnables level 1 is very easy and is only 10 lessons. If my ds got an 80% or better on the quizzes then they would move to the next 2 lessons, if not they would have to re-listen and re-take the quiz. Learnables level 1 basic structures has pictures to match sentences so your dc would have to be able to read to complete this level.
There are only 20 total lessons in Learnables level 1 (basic structures has 114 exercises in 10 lessons). I can't say how long it would take because it depends on your dc. If you were consistent and listened at least 3x/week you could easily finish level 1 in one semester. Level 2 is more meaty.
I was terrible about starting & stopping The Learnables over the years. Latin always took first place in our lang. studies. I hope to be more consistent with my second ds.
If you plan on usign a grammar based foreign lang. program in the future, then I would suggest you begin English grammar in grade 4 or 5. It will help with Latin and other foreign lang. studies. We use and like Rod & Staff English.

We are planning on using FLL through level 4. That should be okay? Spanish fluency is more important to me than Latin. I am probably taking a break from English grammar in 4th grade to concentrate on Latin.... Or I will alternate Latin and Spanish... maybe I will alternate all 3 each year, obviously, I don't know. LOL! :tongue_smilie:
