View Full Version : Can you please help me find a decent pen (not ballpoint)

Here's what I'd like:
-writes very smoothly, no skipping
-won't bleed through paper
-MOST importantly-WILL NOT SMEAR! Seems like the couple of gel ink or Uniball types that I've tried smear terribly
I'm considering going with a fountain pen and have been reading about them, but first I'd like to try something cheaper (they can get pricey-start at about $20 each!)
Thanks for any help!

Well, i LOVE my BIC Velocity pens. I tracked them down from a Drug Co pen i had.
I prefer the 1.0 tip over the .7.
BUT, i love them.....

But I love my fountain pens more than any others I've tried. You can find some for under $10, but I haven't minded spending a little more for good ones. And I'm the only one who uses them.;)

These are what I call "flowy pens" I actually buy mine at the dollarama. They are cheap, write wonderfully and have the flow I want. I don't know brand names, I just know the style, the newest ones have a cow print on them. I hate the way regular ball point pens work, especially when they leave globs of ink to smear. I have not tried those bic velocity ones, sounds like something I may need to get. For now though the pens I get from the dollarama suit my needs and budget. I also have a steadfast rule that no one else touches my pens if they want to keep their fingers intact. BEcause I am so picky about my pens, when I find a good one that works, I hate for it to be out of ink because the kids were using it for their drawings etc.

I am a pen fanatic. I should not have opened this thread!
So where does one find non-bleed through sharpies? Most have those....

I ended up getting the Pilot Varsity, which is a disposable fountain pen, if you can believe it. Since I'd like to transition to fountain pens, I thought this would be a good start and they got great reviews online. Tried it, LOVE it-actually makes my yukky handwriting look fancier! Thanks for the help!

As if I haven't spent enough over there lately! I really want a kind of cheaper one than that because I'm bound to lose it or something. I have my eye on the Lamy Safari or Al Star. Do you have a FP? What kind?

...but I just have to put a plug in for my favorite pen. It's from Office Depot, and let's see....it's a "Foray 0.5 Precision Point".
I *love* this pen!
I will say though, it takes me a couple of days of writing with it to "break it in". I don't know what happens, but after 3 days it writes even more smoothly. It doesn't smear for me (and I'm a lefty, so that really matters to me), but it does have a super-fine tip that is pretty smooth.
I also like the Foray 0.6mm pen. My dh thinks it writes even more smoothly than my fave, but I think he's confused. :)
Oh, and they're less than $6 per 2 pk. from Office Depot (I think). They're the *only* kind I want in my well-used day planner.

I don't mind ballpoints-we use them in the schoolroom around here and it's always nice to have the name of a good one!
