Long, long night. We feel like one came through but did not touch down. The cell was tracking right over our neighborhood and we heard the awful stillness followed by the roar. Of course we saw nothing from our hallway! But our neighbor, who is a retired firefighter so has been trained in spotting this stuff, saw the funnel.

Of course, meantime one of our local colleges was slammed.

Once again, as I seem to do every few years, I wake up to watch my community on CNN. It is our only claim to fame, don't you think we could somehow turn this infamy into a pitch to get a Trader Joe's?

Did your area get hit? CNN has not said much about the east. They have dogs sniffing out the college now, just to be sure. You know you cannot count on college students to be where they are supposed to be!

My daughter's college was fine, but of course that is not where my daughter was!! No, she was in shouting distance of the college that was hit! Of course she was. Because college kids are rarely where they belong. I had to talk her back to her dorm since she could not get to my house. Sirens were blaring, she was screaming and crying and driving, and I was trying to direct her to streets that she might try. It was surreal.

That, of course, is the number one thing...that's you're all fine. But, may I just say, also, that in so many of my life's situations, I wish I could have you alongside. You are one amazing mama! Your good humor is supreme, and I will definitely put in a good word for you and your community the next time I visit Trader Joe's.

We have had a lot of thunder storms and wind advisories. We are under a storm watch until about 11, but it seems calm now. Just scads of rain. I awoke early to the thunder booming this morning. Thankfully, it seems to have gone past. My sister lives in Louisville, KY and they got hit again though. Her house is in a flood zone. The poor girl keeps getting loads of rain. Her sump pumps can't keep up! She's a wreck with lack of sleep trying to watch out for the pumps. She stayed in her basement 1/2 the night last night both watching out for the flooding and the tornados in her area. Scary night for loads of folks!

So glad you and yours are ok!

I was up til after midnight just waiting for another to hit. The last 2 have practically came right up my street (although we've never personally had serious damage, just roof damage in the past), so I just knew it would this time. Thankfully, the scariest thing we saw or heard were the sirens.

Are all the UU students that go to your church OK? I'm going to make some calls in just a minute to find out if any of our church's students were any that were hurt more seriously and/or the ones who were trapped. I wish there was something I could do. I'm so thankful all no students died. It's just amazing, isn't?

So glad that you and yours are ok!!! If I had a Trader Joe's I'd tell them to get the heck over to your neck of the woods!

I am going to check in with our children's director in a bit, one of our children's ministry volunteers is a Union student from out of town. She does not have a vehicle either (various church members tote her back and forth).

Greta, Bekah was at work at Office Max. She was on the register and she said that they could not get to the back of the store, it all happened too fast. So they ducked behind their counters. If that tornado had passed the front of the store with those windows......

I am not going to think about that. God is so gracious to me, I just don't understand how He can be so sparing to me.

I am so glad your neck of the woods was spared. I know that Rebecca is fine, Heather is fine. That's all I know for sure. Most of the folks on my email loop have checked in as well.

I am SO thankful Bekah is OK! I shudder to think also about that storm coming in the front of that building!

I'm trying to get through to my church, but it says, "all circuits busy". I did talk to my deacon and he said that we are organizing some "stuff" at the church. If I could just provide some jugs of water or something, I think I'd feel better, like I've done something to help.

I'm gonna see if I need to drive any students anywhere to meet up with family or friends.

So thankful everyone is okay - I was very worried about your dd, not knowing exactly where she was, and I figured securing her was your top priority. What a miracle that it didn't hit down at the store!

Greta would know this, but to put it in context, the store where Bekah works is hollering distance to Union. So she was in the fray, so to speak.

Glad to hear you are all alright.

One passed within a few miles of here (stoopid university students tried to film it and posed it on YouTube. Stoopid, stoopid kids). Trying to get info on how to help has been difficult, but I am hoping that by Sunday, when all the inspectors and the Red Cross have done their assessments, our church will have some info on what is needed.
