I'm talking about the recipe on hillbillyhousewife.com I read her little rant on the page with the recipe, and I DID follow the directions- but the taste was horrid. It was NOTHING like a Frosty, and it leaves an awful aftertaste. Blech.
That's all. I just thought I'd warn others who may be thinking of trying it. :)

and I have not had the nerve to try it. It helped me avoid Frosty's for a bit. But, I still falter every once and awhile.

OK, I'll be the lonely defender. I made them once quite awhile ago, and although they weren't exactly like frosties, I thought they were certainly passable. My kids loved them. I didn't notice any weird aftertaste. JMO.

DH and I think they aren't too bad.

Well, I think Frosties are horrible, so any recipe that proclaims, like, as its sales pitch, a similarity to Frosties is not going to prompt me to make it. :D

I can't imagine anything less appetizing than powdered skim milk plus oil. I understand her point--that food manufacturers do this all the time--but, frankly, this is precisely the reason I stay away from chem-lab foods. I'd rather have less of the more expensive, tastier thing than more of the cheaper, grosser, processed-food alternative. Everybody's healthier and happier that way. And we still eat on the cheap, cheap, cheap.

I made these once and my ds#2 said they smelled gross, but tasted good. I made them again with half of the powdered milk. Ds #2 commented that now they tasted like the first one smelled. I haven't tried them since.
I am glad someone else feels the same way,

My kids and husband thought they were good! Not as good as a Real milkshake, but better than no milkshake at all. We drank them quite often last summer.

Sometimes I make them with bananas or strawberries or peanut butter. It's an easy, quick, and inexpensive treat.

Perhaps the powdered milk wasn't good? We've never experienced an aftertaste with them.

We killed our blender last summer, making those. We'd branched out into banana, strawberry, blueberry, lemon. We had a lot of fun dropping our core temps with those things, and when the blender could no longer hack the ice, it was a sad day at the Forever Home. :p The boys want the "Can It Blend?" Blender, now. LOL.

Powdered milk really varies in quality--maybe the powdered milk was not good.

I've never made the recipe, I do smoothies, but never anything where I added oil to a drink

It was a very odd aftertaste, and I've never used powdered milk before so I don't know if it was the milk, or maybe the spray (I used canola spray- does that get rancid?), I just don't know. DD liked it at first, but then later judged it to be gross, DH didn't like it either.

I have to say that I wholeheartedly agree with you. I think they taste awful, and I do think that it's the spray, not the milk. I could taste the spray for a looong time. The only reason that I used the spray was because I was dutifully following HH's directions. Never again will I make these. :p

FWIW, my daughters also thought the shakes tasted yucky, but my oldest ds and my dh both thought they were tolerable. I dunno...maybe there's a difference in sprays and that's why some people don't notice the taste? I'm positive it's the spray and not the milk because the after-taste is just like the spray's propellant smells. I was glad to read that I'm not the only person who didn't like them.

They are completely awful and just thinking about those shakes makes me queasy!

Nope, we tried them and no one here liked them. And I didn't even add the oil, because I just could. not. do. that.

Butbutbut.......
I made a very yummy thing yesterday with just frozen strawberries, whole milk, and a little sugar.
I was surprised at how frothy it became in the blender. We made two batches and they were still asking for more. It was sort of the consistency of a frappe. Not quite thick enough for a milk shake, but much thicker than milk. Yummmmmy!!! Tomorrow I may try it with blueberries!

I make lots of smoothies, but the BEST is so simple to make.

I just blend ice, unsweetened chocolate almond milk and a frozen banana together. Tastes just like a milkshale to me, and the only sugar comes from the banana.

To us, a Wendy's Frosty is just a chocolate milkshake with a little cinnamon added. That's how some of the Mexican restaurants down here make chocolate milkshakes and it's wonderful. Try it sometime! You might like it better.

Blech! I forgot about the oil component. Whoever made that up should be spanked.

Wait! Why are we ranting about Frosties???! Please don't tell me they're made with...what was it? 10 chemicals derived from butane? Why would we want an icky substitute? Oh man. Now I'm going to have to go look this up. If I'm not allowed to have Frosties anymore, I'm going to be SO peeved.

ETA: Whew! I thought the rant was about the Frosties themselves, but it's really just about the recipe. I panicked there for a minute. I'm sorry, I'm frugal and all, but I will always be able to scrounge up 99 cents from my car upholstery for a Frosty. *slurp*
