I don't know if this is also the type of thing some of you have been looking for, but here is Missey Grey's (an Ambleside user who passed away a couple of years ago now) file combining SOTW with Ambleside readings.

http://www.geocities.com/justahappygrl/AOHistoryOutline.pdf

http://www.geocities.com/justahappygrl/

I've found it to be a helpful resource in combining SOTW with Ambleside readings.

Missey's are very nice!

I created my own, not because of SOTW, but, rather, I wanted to use the AO books in the WTM history cycle parameters. Missey's follow the 6 year rotation. But thanks...your right, some of the ladies may want to combine SOTW. :)

For those who do prefer to use SOTW, simply replace the Synge books with them. Voila`

I *love* M.B. Synge's 5 book 'The Story of the World Series' :D You can see samples at yesterdays classics

So... with this list, this would be a years history readings? And you would do these re-alouds in a 4 year cycle?

I am not familar with AO. Can someone kindly fill me in what the file means.

Thanks so much. :)

Tina,

Ambleside Online (www.amblesideonline.com (http://www.amblesideonline.com)) is a free curriculum ala Charlotte Mason and uses some of the best books out there! Many WTM moms would love to use them, but they use 6 year history cycles.

I had mentioned in another thread how I would love to use AO, but in a 4 yr cycle, so I'd probably try to set up the books used in AO in a WTM manner of cycles.

Anyway, yes each year in the file is 1 year of history/literature. There are 4 years worth in the file, and they follow the cycle in WTM for the dates covered each year.

Make sense? :)

Ambleside Online (AO) is a very well-conceived, well-organized, and well-maintained website that provides a guideline for implementing a Charlottle Mason Education. It contains specific recommendations for reading lists and schedules for various subject areas for a 0-12 education.

Many people feel that the CM approach and the classical approach complement each other; although, there are definitely some basic philosophical and pedogogical differences.

The significance of Dawne's file is that she has taken the AO readings and fit them into the 4-yr history cycle recommended in WTM, making it very easy to combine the two approaches. AO also has fantastic art, composer, and music studies that can be easily used by anyone. Check it out for yourself: www.amblesideonline.org (http://www.amblesideonline.org).

Enjoy!

:o

I have all of those books here in my home, so that *really* helped! Did I mention that I didn't get to bed until 2:30 am? :D

Now, here is a potential problem:
I have used all of the AO selections from Yrs 1 - 6 for a grade 1 - 4 cycle.

I am afraid that using the Yrs 7 - 12 for a grade 5 - 8 cycle, realistically would be too much, in that having a 10 year old using the books for AO Yr 7...would be WAY over their head, kwim? Or a 13 or 14 year old using Yr 11 - 12 books. No way!

Using Yr 5 and 6 for your average 4th grader is already a huge stretch, IMO. Especially when you add the literature rec's, let alone IF one wanted to add the science rec's.

We may have to choose our OWN books for grades 5-8 and THEN use Years 7 - 12 for our cycle in grades 9 - 12. KWIM?

Between the recommendations in WTM and Christine Miller's ATTA, I'm sure there are plenty of good reads. Having it all in one place is the thing, though. Sometimes I think Biblioplan sounds nice... :-)

Yes, well, when you get that all done, let me know. OK? :D

Seriously, you're so kind to share your work. Thank you, again!

Thank you for answering my questions. :) I think I understand this. I have signed up for AO emails, but never look at it. The whole thing confuses me. :D But I will have to look closer into it, especially the Arts studies. Can you tell I am not used to too much change? ;)

The last post brought up another question. With the suggested book's in the 4 year cycles pdf, what grade level is that for?

TIA for answering my questions. :)

Tina,

Ambleside's Year 1 (which is MY year 2, really) is used by children between 6 - 10. Iffen ya really wanted to, you could use MY yrs 1 - 4 for grades 5 - 8 if your children have not read these books yet. For example, the book Our Island Story is loved, and I mean LOVED by my 12 yr old dd.

Ok... So with your pdf it says AO years 1-4, these are the books "you" would use for grades 1-4 (ages 6-9, I love ages better than grades), but suggest you can use them for older kids (grade 5-8, age 10-13) if they haven't read some of the books on the book list yet.

So then are you planning on revamping AO years to the way you like it for the other 5-8, and 9-12? Correct?
Wow, what a gal. That is just wonderful! I would really be interested in those if you decide to go further with it. Thanks for all your hard work and sharing.

I find this all very interesting... Thank you. :)

Tina,

The books I used are from AO Years 1-6, basically for children ages 6 - 14'ish. I called it Years 1 - 4 because they were put into a 4 year plan (they are actually AO books up thru half of Year 6).

Yes, I think I will give doing Years 5 - 8 and then 9 - 12 a 'shot'...but can't promise anything! lol

The 5 - 8 will be books from All through the Ages/WTM and the 9 - 12 will be from AO Yrs 7 - 12.

I'll work on 5 - 8 next month....my brain hurts! :D

I certainly would. In fact, I think you and your sweet scholars would be a fine addition to our Wednhesday morning co-op. Wanna come over here to CA? It starts in an hour...

I didn't know there was a THIRD edition of ATTA! I guess I'll have to get one. Thanks for letting me know.

Actually, I would trade a cozy week inside the house in a blizzard for the awful long, hot, dry summer here in Sacramento. It's miserable. I miss the east coast.

I'm going to wait to order the new ATTA for my big Rainbow Resource order for next year, which I'll make in May or June. It'll be cheaper and have no shipping costs. I'll still have the whole summer to plan.

Dawne,

Thanks for your help. Now my head is hurting! :) I am confused, but I "think" I might get it. For me, tying to figure out what AO does is really to much right now when I am trying to figure out what your PDF means. I really need to focus on 1 thing at a time.

Your pdf says years 1-4, but in reality it can be used for children ages 6-14'ish (depending on if they read those books or not). Did I get it right this time?

I can wait patiently for you to create your pdfs. I think once they are all done, I can see the big picture and will finally "get it". :D

I won't be able to make it to your place to help (if I/we could I would LOVE to co-op, encourage, fellowship, etc.), but I definitely will be praying for you! :) Thanks for sharing your gift with others.

~Tina who was trying to resist purchasing the 3rd edition of All Through The Ages, but might just have to after all... ;)

Think of the Years in terms of WTM *cycles*:

Year (cycle) 1 Ancients
Year (cycle) 2 Medievel
Year (cycle) 3 Reformation
Year (cycle) 4 Modern

Don't worry so much about grades...use my Year 1 for your ancient cycle for first or fifth grade....doesn't matter, these books work for a BROAD age range!
