He had a cold and cough, and last night and today it got a lot worse and included a fever. So I took him into the doctor and he has ear infections in both ears and pneumonia. His blood oxygen levels were good, so the ped thinks we caught it early. She had me do an albuterol treatment in the office, and sent us home with an albuterol inhaler prescription and an augmentin prescription (for the ears.)
He's doing ok right now, still coughing but playing too. We did 2 puffs of albuterol about 20 minutes ago and I'm going to be putting him to bed soon. (his sleep schedule is off today)
His surgery to remove the dermoid cyst along his eyebrow is scheduled on Feb. 29. The ped is hopeful that he'll be recovered and well enough for the surgery by then. I will take him back to her to be checked that week.
I'm worried about how this may affect the general anasthesia? If he recovers and is well, will they go ahead as scheduled with the surgery? Anyone know more about this than I do?
I just wanted to vent and ask for any thoughts from anyone who may know about this. Thanks.

I can relate. My ds is coughing a lot, and I am really hoping tthis doesn't turn to pneumonia. All too often it does become pneumonia with him. He is also scheduled for general anasthesia for a procedure the first week in March.
If you caught it early, there is a good chance he will recover quickly and they will be able to go on as planned. Just be sure to mention it to the nurses and doctors when you go in for surgery. If his breathing doesn't sound good enough for them, they won't touch him. My friends son was scheduled for a very important brain surgery but tested positive for the flu. the anasthesiologist absolutely refused to sedate him. They are careful. they want your son to be safe.
I hope he is feeling better fast. Glad you were attentive enough to catch this early.

Cathy in IL: That is good to know. The anasthesia is the scariest part of his surgery for me.
I hope that your ds' sickness doesn't turn into pneumonia.
Also, thank you for the prayer WTMindy.

and toddler. Hopefully your guy will be all better by then, and it will be fine. Make sure to mention it to the doctor and anesthesiologist, though. They will listen to his lungs to make sure they are clear, and will question you about any coughing or signs of illness. If he doesn't sound good, they will delay the surgery.
My guy had a cold a couple times before his surgeries, and the docs were very cautious about proceeding. But he had general anesthesia every time, never any problem. Other than all the vomiting afterwards!
Praying all goes well.

My dd had skull surgery at 8 months. She had a complete checkup the day before and the morning of the surgery they checked her over again (heart, lungs, etc.). If she had developed even a minor cold they would have held off. They are very careful about these things.

Now my other 2 kids are sick. So DH said "take them to the doc"...well so here's the rundown:
7yo ds: bad middle ear infection, bronchitis, cough
5yo dd: tonsillitis, cough, rhinitis
1yo ds: pneumonia, ear infection in both ears
3 kids, 7 prescriptions, 3 1/2 hours at doctors in 2 days, I'm exhausted. I need to keep from getting sick myself so I can keep up with taking care of them.
I feel so sad for them, my oldest was crying this morning, his ear was hurting so bad. :(
We've all been passing around colds since Christmas...it got bad for all 3 of them in the past 48 hours.

All six of us are sick right now. I am hoping that means we will all get well together and not pass it around. Hopefully all of your children will get over this and stay healthy for awhile.
