I really need some btdt advice if anyone has any regarding stress incontinence (see why I hesitated to post:o?). I have had a cold and have been coughing so much that I can't help but realize that I have a problem in this area. I have avoided running and jumping since I first discovered the problem- but the coughing has made me face this problem- and I now want to do something about it. If you have any experience with this- and have sought treatment- could you please share?
Thanks!

Well, I pee all day long. And I pee before I leave the house to walk to the horse and again before I hop in the saddle.
And I'm very leary of trampolines.
Kegels seem to help. Are you doing your kegels?

I had this problem after losing over 100 lbs. Due to being so heavy, it wore out the muscle down there that holds it all in. lol I had to go have surgery and have not had a problem since.
Go to a urologist and have tests run. Hope you have relief soon, in a positive way.

A urologist is the doctor who knows about this. There is a simple Rx that helps some. I can't think of the name of it right now, but you see it advertised. And of course your doctor will know.
Then the next thing is a fairly simple surgical procedure. I've heard it referred to as a "bladder tack," but that's not the real name. Do an online search, and you'll see various options. And again, your doctor will know.
I think it's a fairly common problem and nothing to be embarrased about. Just one more reminder that we're not getting any younger. :)

I went to a doc. about this. There are varying degrees of severity to this. I was told to try kegals and also sit-ups first. If your abdominal muscles are weak, then everything flops forward, including your bladder. I was also told to "go twice" - esp. before going out the door to go somewhere. Because if your bladder is flopped over (just one of the causes of this btw) then when you go the first time, a little bit of urine is still trapped in the folded over part. So if you wait five minutes and then go again, the urine will have trickled down to where it can get out.

I get this too, and I've only had one child! The more babies you've had, the more this is likely to be a problem.
No advice, other than to use a pantiliner each day. That's enough for me, at least at this point in time.

I haven't read the other posts, but a urologist took care of this for my sil. It is a minor surgury, but she said it was well worth it.

Well, I'll just say you're not alone! For me, that is by far the worse part of getting sick with a cough. I had a forceps delivery with my 1st and after that, forget it.
Kegels really do help, but they haven't cured my problem.
Losing weight has helped my mom a *lot* with this issue. She was very overweight. She had considered surgery for incontinence, but things improved enough that she decided not to go that route.
Speak openly to a doctor you feel comfortable with. I'm sure there is something that can help.
I'm glad you brought this topic up. I wish it was something more people talked about.
Hope you get better soon

I will make an appointment with a Urologist. I have tried Kegel's in the past, but I am not consistent with them. I googled SUI and did find that the sling surgery looks like a good possibility- Is this the type of surgery you had Faith? If anyone else has any experience with the surgery- I'd love to hear from them. (Pro's/Con's:D) I am going to look into the medication too- but I generally don't like to take medication- especially if it is something that I will have to do on a regular basis to stop the problem.
Anyone else have any experience with this?? :)

I'm sorry it took so long for me to respond. I just noticed your question... Yes, the sling is what I had done and have not had any further problems at all.
Definitely don't suffer any longer. Go to the doctor. Something can be done.

You won't catch me on our trampoline. And (confession time!!) I've had a few nasty surprises when a horse has spooked.

I (thankfully) don't have any personal advice on your problem but due to having family members in the medical field, I will say this: I'd rather see you have the procedure than get on the medication. The potential side effects are much worse than the problem you're currently having. :)
JUST thoughts!

Have the same problem. Little bit worse every year.
Have discovered that when I vomit, I basically just pee my pants at the same time. Very humbling. :-)

I would first get a scrip to see a physical therapist who has extensive experience with pelvic floor issues. If you can put off the surgery, it might be a good idea. If that is not effective, I would seek out a urogynecologist. They specialize in these types of problems.
After my first child was born by vac. extraction, I started having incontinence issues. Kegels helped, but doing them on my own was not nearly as effective as using a biofeedback device to challenge myself. After my third child was born, I could not stub my toe without a puddle on the floor. After I turned 40, I knew I needed help. I felt much better about the surgery idea after seeing a physical therapist who specialized in pelvic floor issues. I did have the TVT procedure 4 years ago. I no longer have stress incontinence, but now have problems with urge incontinence (non-frequency, but trigger related.) When I have to go, I have to go right then and there!!! I am sure that PT would help, but my previous therapist moved over an hour away and the PTs at the hospitals here just aren't as knowledgeable.
There is a yahoo group devoted to this issue. It is called Healthypelvicfloor. Check it out before scheduling the OR:)

I tend to agree with you, I really don't want to get dependant on any medication- and I am not willing to suffer side effects...I just want to make sure that the side effects of the surgery are positive. Thanks!

hth,
Thanks! This does help:D. I hadn't considered PT. I will look into that. My situation is similar to yours...my first was very large- and his big head would would not come out without the vacuum extraction. The other two were easy after that, but it has gotten worse since I hit 40. I will check out the Yahoo group too!

Oh! Vomitting!! I had forgotten about vomitting. Humbling for sure:o. I am going to get this fixed one way or another...I am too old (or young:p) to pee my pants...for any reason!
Thanks!

Do you have any negative side effects? (bladder infections, UTI) I think I will look into the PT option, but I don't hold out a lot of hope.
Thanks for getting back to me!:D

Another option is www.t-tapp.com The "organs in place" exercise really seems to help with this. I can tell if I don't do it for a while.

I had one bladder infection after the surgery and never another one. Never a problem ever. I had it done a couple of years ago.
