I've kidded myself that rep doesn't really matter to me long enough. I'm only two points away from another green dot, and it's killing me!!! Could someone bestow some rep on me as a kindness, to ease my mental state? Pleeeeeease????

Yeah, they negate an equivalent amount of points as that person can bestow. Ultimately, they don't affect you unless you get lots and lots of them; they're mainly used as a way for people to express disapproval about all things great and small.
