View Full Version : Does this writing program exist? . . .

Not a complete writing program, but something that uses dictation to draw out different areas of writing mechanics. Something that perhaps uses a dictation passage several days in a row and focuses on a different element (punctuation, clauses, active/passive voice, etc) each day. Now, I know I could wing it myself, but would love something a little more systematic.
Has anyone come across anything like this?
Thanks so much,
lisa

Maybe take a look on the Bravewriter website: http://www.bravewriter.com/
You might enjoy browsing. If you have no time to browse, look here: http://www.bravewriter.com/thearrow.htm
This link directs you to "The Arrow," a monthly magazine that focuses on a passage from a well-known kid's book. You copy/dictate the passage, and then look at the mechanics, the word choice, and any other writer's device (alliteration, assonance...). I believe these are meant to be used only once a month, or maybe once a week, stretched over a whole month. I think there is also a sample based on a passage from Laura Ingalls Wilder's, Farmer Boy.

Have you checked out Brave writer?

You can order back issues and/or subscribe to current issues of The Arrow or Boomerang (or Slingshot for high school level). This 'program' does exactly what you mention..using dictation passages to draw out different areas of writing mechanics and writing elements. The passages are drawn from real books. In each issue there will be 4 passages from the book. YOu cover one passage a week. Her site of course explains it so much better.
She has many other back issues than what is currently listed on her site. She is getting them in pdf format and will be posting them soon, so I hear.
