And, are there any (free) online sites that list the reading level of most books?
This is an old article from 1999. I've used it a few times and it has matched up with my dd's more formal testing scores.
A to Z Reading Assessment (http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/articles/060899.htm)
For leveled book lists, I like using Lexiles (http://lexiles.com)

You can also use DIBELS. You have to register to get access to their materials, but registration is free and they won't spam your email or sell your address.
http://dibels.uoregon.edu/
Click on "Download" under "Measures" on the left side of the screen. Click on "sign up here" to register for an account.
Once you're registered, go back to "Download" and type in your registration information and click "login".
On the next page, click "I agree."
Then you just click on the grade level you are interested in and print out the materials. The benchmarks are part of the packet for each grade level. You will want to use the "benchmark assessment booklets" for testing. The "oral reading fluency" packets are for practice.
