Has anyone used live&learn apologia general science?

I recently purchased the learn n' folder notebook to supplement Apologia General Science. They recomend using a 2" notebook (which seems monstrously large for just science to me) - can I get away with 1 1/2" notebook? What is your experience?

I can see were you may need a large binder because the mini books are put on card stock. We start our first lesson tomorrow. We are using the 1 1/2 binder.
