OK, maybe other people have been doing this since forever, but I only just thought of it, so I'm taking the credit.
The 8 year old had left the living room a wreck from building forts or spaceships or something, and I knew even if we did it together he would fuss because
1) it's getting close to bedtime so he's tired,
2) it happened early this afternoon, which is so long ago it's like another lifetime, and why should he do the pickup for that other person?
3) it's interrupting his cartoon.
Here's the flash of brilliance: I ask him to assign a task for me to do while he does another task. So now instead of just helping, he's calling the shots. He's happy. I'm happy. The living room gets picked up in record time.
 Woohoo!
