For the fall, I'm specifically looking to do trees and their changing leaves. Any favourite books? Or hands-on activities?
TIA

This might be more casual than what you're looking for, but... We just do a lot of nature walks and try to identify whatever we see, looking things up in regular (adult) field guides when we don't know what they are. It's amazing how much my dd5 remembers! We just bought her a butterfly/moth field guide, and she's been spending a lot of time on her own just going through it.
Take care.
Suzanne.

I was looking at the library for books about colors, and I found, "Why do leaves change colors" by Krupinski Loretta ISBN 0060228741
Now please let me know if you can find a book explaining where "Black" and "White" fit in with the other colors. :p

I have these on my list for first year:
Why do Trees Have Leaves? and other questions about plants
Tell me, Tree: All About Trees for Kids
Young Discoverers Series' Flowers, Trees and Fruits Biology Facts and Experiments
Florida's Fabulous Trees (sub for whatever state you live in :))
Our spine for science is Handbook of Nature Studies and we also will be using Reader's Digest's North American Wildlife as a secondary book.
Of course, we will be doing nature walks twice a week and writing and sketching in our journal and annotating in our almanac.

There's a "World of Plants" series in the Science & Nature section at Rainbow Resource. It's for K-3 and has "Try it Yourself" activities. http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?sid=1217893558-479148&subject=11&category=6563
