I read about a mom who each time her younger dc read a book she would make a small book, put the title on it and hang it on a coat hanger like a little mobile.
Anyone here have any fun ideas?????
Thanks,
AMber

I had the boys each keep a reading journal. They each kept a journal and every book that they read, they drew a page to represent the book(a favorite scene, or front cover) or we made a copy of the front of the book. They also wrote what a review of the book.
I look forward to other ideas as I would like to come up with something a little different for them this year to do to keep track of their books.

That's a cute idea. So you just make a copy of the front and then you could attach it to the wall.

I don't know how young your children are, but I came across an idea I thought was cute. You could make a caterpillar. Cut out a bunch of circles and every time child finishes a book, put the name on a circle and buid a caterpillar on the wall.

Probably won't be so cute if your child is older though.

Hi Janice,
That's a cute idea. I bet my 2nd grader would like that.
You are right, about the older but wouldn't it be fun to get real excited and tell them about it just to see their reaction. lol

Amber,

LOL, I think I'm going to try it out on my 5th Grader. I can just picture the look on his face. Then again, he might surprise me and say, "Ok. That sounds cool." Sometimes he wants to be a little kid and do little kid stuff still.

I've just been making extra copies of a reading log that came with our LL science - "bubbles" for stickers on the top half of the page and lines for listing date, # of pages, and titles on the lower half.

I did the catepillar when my dd was young and learning to read, thought it was fun. We've tried to keep book lists for our history books read, but nothing beyond that. The only time we've been successful beyond that was when it was incentivized, as in the VP reading contest for this summer or the summer library program, where she had a chart to fill in and potential rewards. THEN she managed to keep track of them just fine, haha!

I bought this poster (http://www.reallygoodstuff.com/product_details.aspx?item_guid=aec1b7e1-d8ad-4a0e-a807-a143fffd32f0)from www.reallygoodstuff.com (really good stuff)

I have 2 of them on the wall. One for the books my oldest reads and one for the books I read aloud to them before bed.

When DH was a boy, DH's mother wrote each title down in a little notebook, and then if DH read the book himself, he got to put a gold star beside the title. DH's mother pulled that out to show us a few years back, and it was so fun to see what DH read as a boy -- many of the same books we've read to our own DSs! : )

I haven't tried these ideas, but another homeschooling mom told me about making an ice cream cone and adding a scoop for every book read, with the title of the book written on that scoop. I think there might have been a trip to the ice cream shop originally planned for meeting a goal, but the kids had so much fun just making the ice cream cone that the parents didn't mention the original incentive idea. This mom also said they made a reading tree one year and wrote the titles of books on leaves.

I keep track of our read-alouds (mostly) but there is no way I could keep up with the books my 6 year old son reads to himself. I tried to keep a list in my planner when he first started to read but he took off so fast that I lost track. He reads several books a day.

I've just started to use Library Thing to keep track of our read-alouds.

I just ordered my Book IT packet for this year. If you go to their web site, under the Teacher's tab, you can print pizza slices for them to keep track of the book titles.

Of course, the incentive for a free pizza always works well too!

Here's the link. Click the "Enrollment" tab to order your free packet.
