I thought I had read somewhere about a religion where the worshippers practice spinning to alter their state of consciousness.
Ring any bells? I googled spinning worship - not exactly what I was thinking.
Thanks for any help
btw - we're studying Turkey and I thought this was happening there?

Try "Whirling Dervish."
I'm not sure if that is a culturally acceptable phrase for people that practice this, but it should give you some kind of help.
Here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whirling_dervish

I think they are called whirling dervishes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mevlevi).

Yes, whirling dervishes. You can see them on YouTube. Amazing!! They do it for inducing a state of deep meditation before god.
