They say you should always start with book one when using Megawords. This makes alot of sense because of the way it works and slowly teaches how to decode larger words. We do one page a day. Some units have 10 pages, some have less or more. So we don't always have a set amount of time that we finish a unit. Sometimes we finish a unit on a Tuesday and start a new one the next day.
I've said it before, but I *love* Megawords! My son's spelling has improved greatly since using it because he is able to remember the spelling patterns long term.

So with a 9th grader and a 6th grader you would start in the exact same book? Do they have the flexibility to move rapidly through the earlier books?

The number of pages you work in a day would determine how quickly you finished the books. You will only need to make sure that they aren't moving so quickly that the concepts don't have time to gel.

I presume that each child needs their own book. Is this correct?

Yes. They are workbooks. My dd12 started with the first book and very quickly worked through the first two books, and has slowed down a little on the third, just because there is no hurry for us. It is very flexible, in that you can choose how many pages to do per day, depending on ability, time, etc.

I would because the first book is where they cover how to break down words into syllables.
They can move rapidly through the books. You can give a pretest and find out which units/pages they need to work on. I generally skip many of the pages that are geared towards reading, because ds's reading level is much higher than his spelling level.

Yes. The student books are consumable.

However, I'd have each child complete Book 1 in its entirety, so they thoroughly know syllable types and syllabication rules.

Thanks! And how does it work? Do you give weekly tests? Pre-tests? Post-tests?

Each book has a pre-test which can also be used as a post-test. Once you have given the pre-test, you know which lists they need work on and if they need work on reading and/or spelling for that list. After they have completed the pages for the list, you test them on 10 reading and 10 spelling words. If they get 9/10 right, you move on. Otherwise, you work some more.
Generally, it takes us about 2 weeks to make it through a list, but we skip a number of the pages that are geared towards reading.
