Dh went down to housing this AM. He said they were really nice & said that we don't have to beg them for a/c, that coming to them if the guys have already been out to fix it was the right thing. So they're going to look into it.
Dh is taking care of some other things & then he's going to go back down there. Knowing what the temps are here, he wants a solution today. It was so hot outside this AM at 8 when he left that he didn't even want me going out to do laundry. I was easily convinced to put that one off, lol.
Anyway, thank you so much for y'all's input. It's funny--I *still* feel guilty about this. I mean, not when it's hot, of course, but during the cool times of day, I feel like I'm making a big deal out of nothing. Then it gets hot & we get too lethargic to take care of it. Then it gets hotter, but it's 5, & the office is closed. By midnight, I'm saying I'll do something tomorrow. And then I don't.
Today I'm sitting here, it's still relatively cool, & I'm reminding myself: the hive says this is not ok. I'm not being unreasonable. Etc. You don't know HOW helpful that is. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
And poor dh, btw. He feels so bad. He really hadn't realized how hot it was. I guess I hadn't, either. I mean, we hadn't checked the temps.

Good! You deserve to be cool, my dear. No guilt about that. So get rid of that guilt, okay!

Hm. Housing just called me. They've sent our concern over to the physical plant, the place that fixes stuff that's already been out twice, but this time it's gone to the admin level.
The guy from housing, though, said that "it's hard w/ Tx heat," that most a/c units are "designed to take 20-25 degrees out of the air, so when it gets over 100, 80 might be the best it can do."
What??? First, at this point, I'd be pretty happy w/ 80, but...can you imagine if you went out to eat or shopping, & the store temp was 80?? You'd go home. Do you think the guy's office is that hot? No way.
But since it's off his desk for now, I politely said ok, & asked for the phone # of the guy who *is* taking care of it. There's a hotel on campus, & dh is talking about either that or window units before 5PM. (I think he's dreaming, but I've encouraged the enthusiasm. ;))
Ok, I need to clean before HVAC people come.

Oh my, I'm in DFW also, and I can't imagine no a/c with the heat we've been having. It was 105 the other day! I hope this gets taken care of for you very quickly.
ETA: We keep our a/c set at 78 and it seems to keep up with cooling it to that, so I don't know what that guy was talking about.

Do not feel guilty. Some of the very best husband's need the hissy fit or cold hard facts (those temps.) to go into action. You hubby sounds like a great guy, I hope he's able to find a livable solution one way or another.
I stand by my statement that the temp bologna the office is selling is phooey. It's unacceptable and hundreds of thousands of people, right there in Texas have AC units that do work. It may be time for them to replace if fixing the old unit(s) doesn't cool things below 80'. You deserve a working ac.:grouphug:
PS...some of the new window units don't have to be in a window. They just have this hose that needs to vent.

Tell "housing" that we're going to hammer their collective donkeys if they don't get your apartment cooled off pronto. That's a bunch of crap.

Yeah, he added at the end that his dad's in HVAC. Then he gave me his extension, & I asked, "What was your name again?" He said, "Feel free to call me if you need any further assistance." I said, "I'm sorry--I didn't get your name." He said, "Have a nice day."
It probably wasn't on purpose, since he gave me his # & he's the only guy in the office, but I was annoyed.:glare: Anyway, I think the guy who's in charge of fixing it now is dh's old boss, a nice guy. They all seem nice enough, actually. Which is good...:001_huh:

I don't think they need to be particularly nice. They just need to fix your A/C.
I'm glad things are coming together.

I"m glad you are maybe getting somewhere, but i'd missed the posts on the temps.
We do keep our house 79-80 - ti's all we can afford to keep the AC at.
There is a temperature units are rated to cool the air - you car for example is the 20 degrees, that is why it will recirculate the cold air. It's cooling the cool air doing more. That said, the one for our house pumps air in the 50 degree range.
:grouphug: Here is hoping you get some sort of resolve today.

You know Aubrey I got that some bull from our landlord that it will only cool 20-25 degree cooler than outside, and I said well then why does it have temperatures on the control? Why doesn't it have numbers like 20 down to 1 instead? He had no answer but it is funny they said the same thing to you, now I am curious if it is the same person. HMMMM is it a D area code?
The bottom line is you pay rent and you deserve to have an AC that cools, I find with our landlord we have to pitch a total fit to get anything fixed that only works 1/2 the time the other 1/2 it doesn't! HMMm I think it might be the same guy because our landlord used those exact words

"Nobody else has complained"--I just took my thermometer over to the neighbors. They live upstairs. Since I'm pretty sure it's the unit & its design, not a broken something that could just be fixed & definitely not just *our* apt, I'm, er, raising awareness.
And the 1st neighbor in line w/ the thermometer? She. will. throw. a HISSY fit if I'm right. Housing will WISH they were only dealing w/ me. She's the good friend who wouldn't move her boys to the apt over us. ;)

Aubrey...is this AC thing your talking about a swamp cooler?
We had them in TX (El Paso and Ft Bliss) and I literally told my husband one day if there wasn't a real AC unit in the window by dinner...I'd see him at the Marrott at 5:15. It took 2 swamp coolers 7 fans and 1 large AC to cool a 1500 sq ft home in TX heat.
I hope you get some relief soon!:grouphug:

I think swamp coolers are primarily used where the heat is dry. My dh grew up in New Mexico and they had one, and El Paso would be more deserty dry heat also. Here in DFW it's so humid that a swamp cooler wouldn't do a lot, so that's a good question; if the apartment building has a swamp cooler, that definitely wouldn't keep up at all.

I can't remember what the guy called it, but it's something like that.
The guys just left. They took readings thr out the apt, & it's about 80, although while they were here, it got so hot, I had to lay down because I thought I was going to throw up. *I* don't think it's 80.
But here's the kicker. They said the light in the LA is creating too much heat. We've been keeping it off, but w/ light-blocking shades to reduce the heat, it gets downright depressing.
They said the computer's creating too much heat. Really? I mean, more than, say, an OVEN????
And they turned the fans off in our bedroom, remeasured the temp, & said that that dropped the room temp by 3 degrees. So our fans are making the apt HOTTER. They said.
:lol::lol::lol::lol: <---- These guys are laughing because they've just gone mad & jumped off the deep end. The truck's coming for them.
To top it off, the guy said, "You're the emotional pregnant lady," when he walked in--trying to be friendly, but...um...do you not realize I'm due ANY day & HOT???
So dh reached over to grab my hand & kiss it after they left. He felt *my* body temp, & said, "Your wife's creating too much heat. You need to wrap *her* up in a wet blanket..."
Right. I actually think I *do* need to be removed from the apt. I'm a fire hazard. (And they did imply that our light is so hot it's a fire hazard!)

He's on the phone w/ housing now, to see if they can do something in the meantime while they conduct their "research."

Aubrey,
I'm completely serious here. Come over and play at my house tomorrow! It is too hot to deal with right now. I can't hardly breathe outside today. I'm not kidding, we can do a DFW party at my house tomorrow - I'm sure there's food we could all eat somewhere in my kitchen. I haven't really looked since dh left, but I'm sure it's there.
Good luck with those ac people. And don't let them convince you that it's cool enough. Have them come back at 5:00 pm and see how "cool" it is in your house. Call the fire dept or electric company and see if they can do an "official" temp reading. There are just some things that aren't acceptable in Dallas in July!

Our HVAC people fed us that same cr@pola about AC units only being able to do 20 degrees or so off the temp. We had a brand new unit put in that was doing a worse job of cooling than the old broken one, LOL! They finally discovered a problem with the coil (which had to be replaced) after someone had been out here no less than 3 times, checking exactly the same things and finding nothing wrong. 4th time's a charm, right? Isn't the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results? "You should change your filters more often." "You shouldn't leave this vent closed." "I know it's 100 degrees but you're going to have to live with it being this hot in your house." OK, that last one's not what they really said, but the meaning was clear.
You must keep on them. Actually your dh needs to keep on them. Your lamp is not a fire hazard for Pete's sake. You are NOT being unreasonable. IT IS TOO HOT IN YOUR HOUSE.

Oh my gosh! Were you *here* today?? (looking under the sofa & the sofa pillows for Beth)
Yep. They think it's the coil now. And you pretty much quoted everything they said.
Btw, I've been thinking about how sweet your offer to assist w/ the birth was. I could never have anybody I *know* there, though. Or that I have to *look* at again. Not make *you* look? Cover my eyes, too! Actually, if it were up to me, the mw wouldn't look, either.
But given our mutual distaste for such things, I consider the offer to hold my hand a sign of true friendship! :D (You know we'd probably both pass out.)
