Has anyone used Omnibus 3? What did you think? Would it be hard to start at this level for the first time? What kind of writing assignments did it include?
thanks,

We started at Omnibus 3 this year in 9th grade. WE haven't used Omnibus before. So I'm not sure what level you're referring to. I think it's an appropriate level for 9th graders, but would hesitate for younger. The books are sometimes long like Mein Kampf and Uncle Tom's Cabin and sometimes shorter like Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Pride and Prejudice. The selections are good, but we are picking and choosing. We are definitely not reading all of them. We chose from the Primary and Secondary selections.
The writing includes some Progym stuff with not a lot of instruction just some guidance (not good for people like us who have not done any progym), but it also includes assignments like writing letters, compare and contrast, using author's style, story writing, and lots of other different writing activities. It also assigns activities like debates and watching films.
My impression is positive except it lacks literary analysis. I had to use some Cliff notes to pick out literary elements when I thought they were important. I liked the essays that introduce each book, the worldview questions, the discussion questions, and for the most part the writing assignments. We used another source for actual writing instruction.
