I am looking for American History for my dd next year in 11th grade. Right now, I'm leaning toward Hewitt's Nation of Nations, but I looked at Notgrass last night (just a quick look) and I liked that it had lots of primary sources and poems, essays, etc. (original works of the time period) to read right along with the text.

I am not looking at doing the Bible portion of Notgrass or the Literature works. Dd has already read all of these anyway. I'm just looking at it as a history program.

Anyone with experience re: Notgrass? Is there something I'm missing that I should see with this? Could anyone compare/contrast Notgrass with Nation of Nations?

It works just fine without using the lit or Bible portions. But, I would recommend using the other primary sources...they are pretty critical. What we did is use Notgrass paired with The Teaching Cos videos The History of the US. They match up quite nicely and if you decide to go this route, I'll be glad to share my schedule that I figured out.

By the way Teaching Co has their history on sale now, so if you decide to go this route you will want to order soon. Also, if you've never ordered from them before they will usually give you the sale price on the first thing you order anyway...but you have to ask for it. At least that has been my experience.

I have to dash....please ask further questions if i can help.

We use Notgrass World History and Notgrass American History along with other sources as part of our 4-year chronological.

We appreciate the clear writing and point of view, it is a nice contrast to the more secular materials we use along with the Notgrass.

And the Notgrass family are just the nicest people. Okay, that really has nothing to do with anything, but they are!:)

I agree that the primary source documents are very important to the course.
The new edition is very nice, and has all the primary source documents bound in one book with type that is very easy on the eyes.
The two volumes are now bound also. No more spiral binding!
I also agree that they are the nicest family and have great customer service.

Oh, good! These positive replies are just what I needed to hear. I love the idea of the primary sources. That is what drew me to the course originally.

Sharon, I'd LOVE to have your schedule for the Teaching Co/Notgrass. That would be the icing on the cake.

Thanks so much, everyone! :)

Sharon,

If you are willing, I'd love a copy of your schedule. I, too, have an 11th grader studying US history next year and living overseas we need *simple* enhancements--one course from TTC might just be perfect....

Thanks so much,

For Stacey in LA...if you haven't found the web site for the Teaching Co already, here it is....

For the schedule...I tried the attachment thingy, but the file is too large. I'll pm you with my email address and you either give me yours or email me and I'll send it your way.

Sorry for the delay....sometimes I forgets to check back....:o
