I'm just looking into different options for next year (9th) and the BJU DVD Science courses looked interesting to me. They come with the lab DVD and lab manual & kit.
What are these like? Any comments?

Not sure if you are talking about the DVD course or just the labs on DVD.
My oldest dd is taking the 8th grade science course on DVD and it has been well worth the cost. She has learned so much more than if I had tried to teach it to her myself and her 'instructor' is enthusiastic about the subject matter!!
We do most of the labs (called investigations), but she is able to watch them first on the DVD and then does them herself.

We have been extremely pleased with the Space & Earth Science course on DVD. My 8th grade son is learning so much that he is now begging for a course in astronomy. :) My 5th grader is happily listening and learning alongside him, too (but not doing the written work).
My only criticism so far is that a silly comedy team is occasionally used to teach a small part of the lesson. I grit my teeth over the notion that youths won't learn serious subject matter unless we make it entertaining.

We've used Physical Science (Mr. Harmon), Biology (Mrs. Ericson), chemistry (Mr. Harmon, again) and Physics. With the exception of Physics, the above were all excellent, and the labs were much better than Apologia or Abeka. I will not use Physics again.
Earth Science (Mrs. Vick) has been revamped, but if you have a younger child, when Mrs. vick teaches *anything*, it is great. What a talented, enthusiastic teacher.

We are currently using BJU DVD's for physical science(Mr. Harmon), and we are thoroughly enjoying it! Mr. Harmon explains the concepts very clearly. I highly recommend his class! I plan on using the biology DVD's next year.

My middle son took Mr. Harmon's BJU HomeSat Chemistry class and loved it! My younger son is in 5th grade science and learning gobs, it's one of his favorite subjects.
As another poster mentioned...the Physics class is not so good. My middle son is going through the Physics class now and finds the teacher scatter-brained () and somewhat confusing to follow. The class is interesting on a whole, but I think he would enjoy it better with a different teacher.

My daughter is in Mrs. Ericson's Biology class this year (the live classes, not the DVDs). She just loves it! My son (fifth grade) is enjoying listening in so much that I've pretty much decided not to try to do any other school with him during Biology -- it's pointless to try. Mrs. Ericson is interesting and engaging and we could not be any happier.
This is our first year using BJU, so I don't have any other experience to offer you -- but I cannot speak highly enough of the Biology class. It's fantastic!
