*groan*
He won't ("CAN'T!") stop humming Tom Petty. And he doesn't even know the whole soooong. *whine, whine*
It's making me nuts.
Ever heard a continuous loop of Free Fallin' hummed for four hours?!
Share my pain. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pa98yttfhMY)

I feel your pain. We're constantly telling our ds 12 to stop the unnecessary noises!

I'd've bopped him about 3.75 hours ago ;).

I've been known to make swishing motions over my dc's heads, while saying "Whack! whack! whack! whack!" They get the point - "cease and desist!" But since I'm being silly about it no one gets bent out of shape.

My kids are still little so we usually do not sing much Tom Petty but Veggie Tales and kids bible songs are big around here. Once one of the kids starts singing the song, (usually only about one line) the rest of us are stuck singing it for the day. By the end of the day, we are ready to whack each other!
Find a copy and play the song, this might help him get rid of it.

Similar here, except we just do one whiff over the ear and say, "CUFF!"
Another handy trick is to lick your hand and then smack the "other" on the forehead with the same hand. We learned this from an Italian newlywed couple. We thought it should have been taught in our marriage counseling classes--what a lot of aggravation we could have been saved over these 25 years. Of course, it seems that we could also have picked this up in those otherwise-worthless birthing classes at the hospital, but nooooo. There was yet another chance in the parenting classes at church...alas, a missed opportunity.
To paraphrase the professor, "What DO they teach them in these schools?" The spit-smack is just the thing to learn.

My 8yo DS sings songs over and over with the WRONG WORDS! I admit it drives me nuts and after asking kindly multiple times to stop the constant noise have sent him to his room. I feel your pain

No it is not wrong. It is completely justified! I used to like Garth Brooks, ds got no less than 6 new cd's for Christmas. I have listened to GB for 43 days stright now. Ds likes to sing along- he is all heart! :-)

I'd rather listen to your little one singing it than Tom Cruise.

A quick splash of water seemed enough to restart his brain in non-Petty mode. I'm pretty sure it was the splash and not the threat of a dunk into the creek beyond the cliff across the street...
Either way, whew!

Someone once said to me that seven-year-old boys come with a sound track. So far, the tape hasn't run out and Calvin is 11.

Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes, which was from Crissy's old blog: Boy: Noise, covered with dirt.

He won't ("CAN'T!") stop humming Tom Petty.
Seriously...you would hit somethin' if you heard my child go for the soprano/dog-pitch notes in Avalon.
Why my favorite Roxy Music song? Why with such volume?! It makes her glass-breaking hawk call seem downright soothing and Calgonic. ;)

You are permitted to bop them repeatedly on the head with an empty paper towel holder. The noise is very carthartic.
