Hi, I am thinking about enrolling my daughter, a rising senior, in this program and was hoping others could share their experience. I have also considered Potter's School and Scholar's online, but I am looking for constructive criticism without pressure....thoughts, experiences, etc. Is it effective and is the expense worthy?

TIA!

My son did the essay and research paper and my dd did the essay course. They both benefited from them. The feedback on their writing was valuable. They're very good at encouraging them but also giving them constructive criticism.

The website recommends taking the Composition I first. Did you opt out and choose the workshops? How did you decide which courses you needed?

TIA!

I've had two students use the Write at Home courses. They have each taken the Composition I semester class. It was excellent for my idea guy with poor grammar skills, but not so great for my grammar girl with less creative ideas.

My ds has also taken the Composition 2 semester class. It was again a good fit for him. He needs the editing and polishing the instructor provides. She was also very encouraging to him on his strengths.

Dd is taking the Essay Workshop this summer, and I am very impressed with the helps, criticism, and encouragement she's receiving. It has definitely helped her improve her writing both style and clarity, and she's learning how to cite her sources properly.

Overall, the classes have been well worth the money to me, but then again....I really hate having to edit papers. :tongue_smilie:

I posted on another thread about our Write@Home experience--very positive.
We just did Essay 1. I wish we had more time--I'm caught between 3 classes!

The feedback was very, very helpful, and the book they used, The Lively Art of Writing, was clear and concise.

My 14 yo ds completed Comp 1 with Write at Home last year as a ninth grader. The coach was certainly encouraging and ds had a positive experience. He did well on the assessments and he enoyed reading the positive comments. I felt, however, that ds was not challenged enough. I don't think his writing improved enough to warrant the price of the class.

This year he will be doing Advance Comp with The Potter's School and I think it will be more of what I was hoping for in a comp class. The placement test alone was tougher than anything he had to do for Comp 1 with Write at Home. I believe this class will better prepare him for college work.

I realize the Write at Home experience may vary depending on the coach, but I think the assignments were a little on the lite side, too.

Just my humble opinion, FWIW.

Dd took the 7th grade composition class and found it very light. She'd get comments like "Great job" and nice sentence" and didn't feel that she learned a lot. Maybe the high school classes and workshops are different.

We did Home2Teach's Paragraph class and she was very challenged by that. We'll continue in August with the Writing about Books class.
