believe the sad news.
I guess I'm assuming that y'all heard on the news today of the shooting that happened in a retail store.
It's so surreal....

Very sad. we used to be in that strip mall often until we moved. My friend's husband is a police officer there. I haven't talked to her about it yet.

about a 15 yo in MD (very near where I live now and where I grew up) who shot both his parents and 2 younger brothers (11 and 13) simply b/c he was having disagreements w/ his father! His classmates described him as an honor student, not violent, and the last person they'd think would do something so horrible. What is this world coming to?

The story about the 15 yr old boy killing his family struck VERY close to home for us!
My husband's family grew up next door to the mother who was killed. They've known her family for 30+ years.
She was my SIL's best friend - they went to college together.
She and her husband were at my wedding .. and my baby shower for my oldest daughter ... it's so tragic.
They were wonderful, stupendous people, and we're just devasted.
What a tragedy.

I heard these both, too.
Why do I think, "Unbelievable" when in fact it is so common?

It's *not* common. Mass media brings every bizarre incident into sharp focus. We have an impression of much wider danger than really exists. Of course, if it happens to you, no statistic about relative infrequency is meaningful, but it helps to keep some perspective.
And I send deep condolences to those folks who are suffering through such awful loss.

Maybe someone like GothicGyrl can point out where I can find statistics but I stand by my use of common.
It's common for a family member to be the perpetraitor when someone is killed. It's more likely for it be a family member or someone close to the victim(s).
