Okay, I didn't see a thread started for today so here goes . . .
I ran, I guess I'll say, 5 miles today. It is my regular route, which I thought was 6 miles, but I finished it way too fast for it to be really 6 miles, especially when I'm stopping for stop lights and trains and the like! It took me 49 minutes and I wasn't going fast! ;) I guess I'll have to figure a way to extend the route . . .
How did you do today?

I've had good luck with this site (http://www.usatf.org/routes/index.asp) to map out running routes.
I went my normal, but today I did pick-ups. (Running at a faster pace for a short amount of time, maybe 30 seconds.) It's one of those things that tricks your body into burning more calories. Since I'm doing this right now as a way to lose weight...
The wonderful thing is that someone finally took care of the tree that fell across the trail last week. Nothing to jump over anymore! It wasn't a big tree but it wasn't flat on the ground either.
I think I'm going to order new shoes soon. I think I'm past due anyway.

Cheryl,
Thanks for the site. I'll check it out. Way to go to you too! I wish I had trails to run on, I hate to have to start and stop when I'm running "in town." Slows down my pace! But, running out in the countryside here by oneself is not good either.
I need to get new shoes too! I really needed them this spring {I like to change them yearly} but I was training for a mini triathlon and I didn't want to break in new shoes right before. Every time I run I think about how I could use a new pair!:)

I couldn't decide whether to run today or not. I ran on Tuesday and was fine, but that night when I was mowing the lawn, my calf started bothering me and has felt very tight ever since. I've been trying to stretch it out, but soon after stretching, it feels tight again. I'm thinking I will just go walk today to see if I can work it out. Anybody have any other suggestions?

I went out for what was supposed to be a short walk (1/2 mile). I walked the first half of it and then, well, I couldn't help myself. "More Than a Feeling" by Boston was on the mp3 player, the sky was blue, the rain was gone, the breeze was blowing at me, and I just started running. I only ran 1/4 mile, but considering that one week ago I couldn't even walk, I'm *thrilled* with it. My legs felt great, my lungs felt great, my back felt great....until I stopped. I stretched it out when I got home and took some advil. I'm going to keep stretching it out and keep moving so it doesn't lock up on me again.
But boy did it feel good to run, even if it was only 1/4 mile. It gives me hope that I'll be back at it full throttle very soon!!!

Good on ya!
I have a planned rest day today, thank goodness. Silly as it sounds, I'm feeling a bit decrepit what with the biking/running combo I've been doing these past few days. Plus this week is just feeling kinda strained what with two extra boys on hand. We have two Ugandan orphans staying with us and it's proving to be a long week. For us adults, anyway. The young people are having a ball.:tongue_smilie:

Am I good, or am I good?;) Just kidding. I give you all the credit for actually summoning the werewithal to get back out there; you just needed that little nudge.:) Glad you felt good! And hey, I just posted in another thread about cranking the radio way up when Journey is on. Same is true of Boston. "More Than a Feeling" ~ love that one.

Oh I absolutely needed the nudge! I was thinking of all you guys running, and I really just couldn't help myself!
Journey, Boston...yeah. There are some things that I believe you are required by law to CRANK IT UP. Those two are among them.

Congrats DB! Good for you! And Colleen, I didn't know you had kids from Uganda with you this week - wow! Regardless of what happens with Katya, I've discovered that it is DEFINITELY worth it to host these kids if at all possible. We certainly had our ups and downs and our eye is toward adoption, so I know our situations are a little different, but even if we adopt Katya, I can see us hosting kids again.
Today I ran 3 1/2 miles. It still was later than I'd like, but I didn't feel like I was about to die. Cheryl, I like pick-ups too. It helps keep it interesting!

Today is swimming day for me... who knows what Coach has planned for the main set but I generally get anywhere from 1800-2300 meters done. I *heart* swimming, especially in the summer.

I watched ds8 swim since today was his last day until after Labor Day. I will have to find somewhere to walk/run until then....it is a 20 minute drive to that park.....too far just to go running. I like it there though. Might have to force myself to keep things up for the next month or 6 weeks until I can get back to the park with the pool where ds swims.
Glad you felt like running DB! I thought Colleen was probably right about that.

Stretching is probably the best thing. I don't know what you mean by *bothering* you, but I have aches and pains quite frequently in my legs. If it isn't a pulled muscle and just tightness, I run anyway. No pain, no gain, right? On your walk, you could always try running and then if your calf starts bothering you, stop. Or you can do spurts of running and walking. :) I hope you feel better soon!

Good for you DB! I love your story about the music! I don't run listening to music. I use it as a quiet/reflection/meditation/enjoy outside time. But, there are some songs I wouldn't mind listening to for inspiration! :)

Well, I'm glad you checked in, Colleen, because, I was beginning to think you all ran everyday!! I'm glad to hear there are planned rest days in your schedule! Mine was yesterday, but after reading the thread I felt like running! But, my two oldest are at Grandma's house and I'm here alone with Buttercup. Can't just go out and run! :)
How long have you been doing the biking/running combo? When I was training for my tri, it took a good 6 weeks before I felt *good* about doing both. It usually takes me a mile to get up to speed after being on the bike!:)

Alls I can say is that you're my hero! I definitely don't *heart* swimming but I like the challenge of it. To me it is another sport to "divide and conquer!" I hope to put it in my fitness routine on a regular basis. I got bit by the triathlon bug and would like to try a long one!:)

To be honest, this week feels endless. When we've hosted Ugandan choir kids before, they've had a busy schedule, just staying here few nights, and going away to do school or rehearse during the days. The group now is taking a summer break and is able to stay with host families for full weeks with no schedule. My boys really were really excited about this opportunity. And all the boys are enjoying themselves. It's just been a lot more work than I anticipated, and not great timing. Still, I'll likely do it again given the chance.

It was quite warm but we did our 5 km (although truthfully I was very thirsty by the end). My running partner really stretches me -- I would tend to do my same old, comfortable route -- she makes me do various routes which I'm sure is much better for me.
Then, after dinner, I went for a bike ride with my kids. This is momentous considering I haven't ridden a bike in five years. It was very enjoyable!

You're a good woman, Colleen! Hang in there! Those endless summer days with extra kids (neighbors, friends, Ugandans, whatever) rattling around can get quite tedious.
And yes, pick-ups, fartleks - same thing. For some reason when I think of "fartlek," I think of small European cars or IKEA. I guess it's better than thinking of the obvious alternative!

I've been wanting to do a triathlon as well... but haven't yet. I don't have a road bike and am afraid I'll get hooked and need a bike, clip-in shoes, gloves, helmet, jersey, tri-suit, patch kit, etc. Right now, a pair of running shoes, a swimsuit, and occasional race fees are all the expenses I have. Easy on the budget.

You don't have to have all that stuff to do a tri! My first 2 tris (my only 2 tris) were on a mountain bike in running shoes. Tri suit is optional as well. I did have tri shorts and a long bra top. But I saw women there doing the ti in just a swim suit.
You do have to have a bike and helmet. I wouldn't know what to do with a patch kit if I had it.
In case you want to buy tri gear, check out desoto sports (http://desotosports.com/home/index.asp). I've gotten some great deals on their sale page. ($25 for an all in one thing that normally runs close to $100.)
