Where do they hang out when you aren't playing them?
We have three violins and three cases. They have been staying on a table in the living room, but that table is ugly and we are getting rid of it. SO that leaves me with three violins. I would love to HANG them on a wall if someone can point me to the correct hardware - we have lots of empty hall space. I would still have to figure out where to store three cases all week between lessons....
But even if you don't hang yours, what do you do with them to keep them safe but available?

We have two violins in their cases under our coffee table in our living room. It looks tidy and is easily accessible for our practice.
We just started lessons a couple of weeks ago!

Unfortunately we keep ours in cases. They lean up against one of the walls of the room we school in. Dh keeps meaning to buy the hooks to hang them on the wall for easy accessibility but hasn't happened yet.

We have a violin stand on the buffet in the dining room. It's really nice having it out - there's a lot less whining about taking it out to practice (and about putting it away - I used to always find it on chairs - eek!). The shoulder rest can stay on, and there's a place to hang the bow - she just needs to pick it up and go.
The store where we bought it also has handy dandy things to hang the violin and bow on the wall. I almost wish I'd bought that - then I wouldn't need to take up any flat space at all - and they're cheaper! I didn't see them till after I'd bought the other...
Here are pictures of many different stands:

We have the Ingles violin/viola stand. The wall hanging ones are the second and third ones - I do see one advantage to the tabletop ones now that I'm looking at it - they fit all violin sizes - the wall hanging ones are for 3/4 and 4/4 sizes.

Here's a link to the hanging hardware at Shar Music. http://www.sharmusic.com/search.asp?SKW=ACCVLNINSTANDKEY§ionID=5&catID=36
We had dd's violin on a table stand when she was younger. Once she bought her good pernambuco bow, we bought a bow case so the bow would stay protected when the violin was on the stand.

We own stands that hook to music stands *but* have yet to choose to use them. The research we've done regarding the safety of instruments on display like that is mixed review so, for now, we store them in their cases which are tucked behind a hope chest style bench that younger dd uses to practice her cello. Incidentally, her cello is a student grade instrument so it gets displayed beautifully on a cello stand in our music room. :-)

My dh and I are both woodwind players - so we have about 10 instruments between the 2 of us.
Truthfullly? They stay in their cases, in closets. Safer that way :D
