View Full Version : This whole rep point business would be a great experiment for a Sociology student

Can you imagine?
If you were a graduate student and your topic was something like "The Effects of Randomly Awarded Merit Points on Groups of Message Board Subscribers."

They could have a field day!
(I need a ROFL emoticon here)

:D:D:D:D

Yes, it would.

And you owe me that rep you promised.

Not that I care about that sort of thing, no, not me.

In actuality, it would. Kidding aside, it is definitely a Pavlovien type study--say something everyone agrees with, you run to see your points. Join in on a hot thread, first thing you check is how many negatives you received (grin)..

Of course, I AM collecting negatives, but golly gee--I can't seem to get any that are worth a sod. :) All I keep getting are ones for bad grammar, bad use of a word, using made up words or "omg you are such an ebil person, don't be so mean you hurt my wittle feewings".. ;)

How do you know whether the point is positive or negative? I have 11 (not much... not that I want bad ones ).

Really? Maybe only really cool people on Macs can see them.

If the box next to the comment they left(or didn't leave) is green or grey, it's positive feedback, if it's red it's negative.

LOL, I am so much WAY COOLER than you, LOL. :p I still only see a big black box, so it is my opinion that these smilies must be way beneath me. :D

interent message board dynamics in general would make a fascinating study. I am always amazed at the crazy dynamics of the hive. I think it will be interesting to see if the dynamics are different because of the new format. I also think the feedback thing makes even more interesting. Too bad it has to be anonymous!

All of my reps are anon and only 3 left comments at all. I don't mind that they are anon. It really is not that big of a deal. Nobody sees my rep but me, why is this such a big deal? We can't win anything can we? :D

Is it better to be ignored than hated?
Here to hoping this becomes an ancient hasbeen that only us early people remember.

My problem with anon is like the old board, people hide behind that anonymity and don't bone up to their naughtiness.

If you want to leave me a bad rep, please do. But have the guts to admit who you are to me. It's very much like talking behind my back--it makes you a coward to do so, but doubly so when you do it then act like my friend to my face. KWIM?

Toni, every time I try to give you a good rep, it tells me I have to spread some reputation around before I can give you any again, so this other poster must be spreading it far and wide to be able to rep you so often. Plust there's a daily limit on how much rep you can give out, so it's all odd- maybe they have more than one log in, or maybe it's a "we hate GothicGyrl" gang?

I don't know!

I think the ignore and buddy lists are great.

I have a couple of people on my ignore list and that keeps me from getting emotional. I have a tendency to get emotional about this silly forum. :o

The buddy lists are neat because at the bottom of the opening page you will find a list of who's on right then and your buddies will have little plus signs (or something like that) next to their handles. You can see at a glance if your fave posters are live on the boards!

Rep is silly and useless, I think. You can't see anybody's points, so who cares? Every 24 hours I go around and sling rep at all my virtual friends, I almost always do it anon and without comment. When it won't let me rep a certain person I just go to the next person on my "fave list". Occasionally I leave a comment and then I do state my identity. But most of the time I am slinging rep not based on a particular post but because I just like the person's posting history. It is completely silly, I know. :p And if they took it away tomorrow I would not particularly care, but while it is here, I play with it.

So if you find good rep on something silly like a "Me Too" type post and you were scratching your head wondering what was so profound about "Me, too"; it might have been me. It is just my way of saying "I like you, I really like you!"

Okay, back to planning out 7th grade grammar lessons for February:rolleyes:
