I've recently started taking my kiddos swimming and using the time of their lessons to get some exercise myself. I really enjoy it, but the chlorine is killing my hair. I've tried wetting it, and working in conditioner and leaving the conditioner in before going in the pool, but the chlorine still penetrates my hair. I have porous hair anyway (can't do a temporary color rinse--it never washes out), so the problem may be even worse for my hair than normal hair.

What have you tried that has worked?

We had the same chlorine problem with hair around here after swimming, too .... I know just what you mean! I found a product called UltraSwim Replenishing Shampoo that has really helped alot. It is meant to remove chlorine, chlorine odor, and replace lost moisture. We wash our hair with it as soon as we get home, and it has helped immensely, way more than when I tried using extra conditioners, etc. I found it at Target, but I know I've also seen it all over -- WalMart, grocery store, etc.

HTH!

My dd's had the same problem in the summer, but theirs was also green. My beautician recommended Aloe Rid which is a clarifying shampoo, followed by a deep conditioning. It did great on their hair. I believe Aloe Rid is made by Nexus, but you can probably find a cheaper shampoo that does the same. HTH!

You might also find swim shampoos at online swim discount places. My kids don't seem to have this problem, and our regular shampoo works. However, we don't wash their hair every day so that it doesn't dry out too much. Even my blonde doesn't suffere green hair. But then, we never did, although I've seen lots of blonds and blondes whose hair does become green!

My year round, daily swimmers use a product available at the Sally hair product stores. I've not seen it elsewhere. It's called Ion Swimmer's Shampoo. They also have conditioner and spray in conditioner.

Oh my goodness! LOL I didn't read this or even see it before I posted my "Is hard water killing your hair?" post! Funny! :p

Hello, I have a swimmer with almost Olympic trials cuts so I think I can help. First of all, I hope your wearing a swim cap- that's a must. The best products I have found have been by Nexus. They make 2 types of clarifying shampoos for swimmers. One is a lighter clarifier and the other is a deep penetrating type clarifier. One is called Aloe Rid, as was suggested by a previous response. We've had best results when we've used both of them, one right after the other, followed by a heavy conditioner like humectress (also by Nexus.) The instructions for use are right on the bottles. There are few good products out there. IMO this is by far the best system around. Good Luck!

Oh, I'm so glad to meet you on these boards. I have lots and lots of questions for you. Would it be okay if I sent you a private message? My kids are early on in their competitive swim career, but my 12 yo is very, very serious about it.

Thanks, Everyone. I'll check out those shampoos. I am using a clarifying shampoo, but not those brands. I'll look around for them.

I was afraid someone would tell me I need a swim cap. I hate them. :(
