Dd loves workbooks. I got AAS because *I* needed the rules and liked the hands on.... she wants to be fairly independent and she likes workbooks. She is asking to do spelling but says AAS is boring.
What are my options?

I don't know about "fun", but SWO is a workbook type program. It does have games, crosswords, etc. You could also get some of those colorful workbooks they have at Dollar stores and Target in the dollar section. I've found spelling books at our local Ollie's called something like Spelling for Christian Kids, etc. that go by grade level.

Spellwell is a workbook spelling program, and a bit more "fun" than many other such programs. Rainbow Resource sells it, as do many others.

Here's another option
Evan Moors Building Spelling Skills (http://www.evan-moor.com/Series.aspx?CurriculumID=3&ClassID=180&SeriesID=14)
We used this the last 2 years. We're going to try AAS because my dd needs more hands on and my ds will most likely do a combination. I'd like to go over more of the rules with him but he also likes workbooks for spelling.

Spelling Workout gets my vote!
I wouldn't call it "fun" (I wouldn't call any spelling curriculum fun though!), but Building Spelling Skills workbooks by Christian Liberty Press is effective, rigorous, and easy to use!
Here is grade to look at samples of... you can click around to see all the levels.

Spelling Workout is definitely workbook-based. I don't know if it's "fun," but it did keep Becca busy.
I was actually thinking of changing over to AAS. Does your DD not like the methods, or does it move too slowly? I'm really driving myself nuts over a spelling curriculum!

Another vote for Spelling Workout. It is a workbook, includes some puzzles, each chapter starts with a short story and a spelling rule, my ds enjoys it.

We like Spelling Workout -- you get rules, games and vocabulary all in one book.

This hasn't been mentioned yet, but we like "A Reason for Spelling" for elementary spelling. It has a christian program so keep that in mind. It has a devotional stories that tie in with the spelling lessons. There are games to play, hands-on ideas, etc. www.areasonfor.com

My ds7 loves R&S Spelling by Sound and Structure. It's pretty plain looking and doesn't have any games or anything exciting, but for some reason, he really looks forward to it.

I've been using Steck-vaughn Spelling Linking Words to Meaning for the last 5 years. This is a great workbook that includes a lesson each week in proof reading, developing a story or paragraph, reading a story and filling in the spelling words that are missing. It is more than a pump and dump memorizing of the words. The workbooks are colorful -- which to me usually means it's not worth much educationally-- only they are packed with many different ways to learn and retain the spelling words and meanings (including a dictionaryand lessons on how to use it).
My kids keep a spiral notebook to keep their writing/spelling lesson and spelling tests in along with the workbook. It's the one subject that they don't complain about doing :)
They are available thru Rainbow Resources for about $15.00 (1st-6th grade) and don't require a Teacher Manual (though it's offered). My kids have loved them, and score exceptionally high on their Stanford Testing in spelling, often a perfect score.
