We're going to practice looking up words etc a little this year - does anyone have a recommendation for a elementary dictionary?

Thanks!

We just use Webster's American Family Dictionary. We had children's dictionaries, but they didn't have the words my dc wanted to look up. They are doing fine with the "real thing".

Last year, I did a lot of research on dictionaries for my second grader. I found several dictionaries that had terrific content, but were too heavy for my liking. Then I found Jolly Dictionary. I LOVE it and so do my kids. It is soft cover with very thick glossy pages inside. Here are some of the features:

Each double page spread has the alphabet across the top. On the right hand side of is also the letter of the alphabet for the section you are in.
The dictionary is divided into 4 color-coded sections to help kids find their way around the dictionary. For example letters a-e are red, letters f - m are yellow, etc.
There are over 6,000 words with definitions that are easy for young kids to understand.
Each word is in bold and the phonetic spelling is included.
The part of speech is given after the definition for each word.
Words are separated by nicely with thin litter divider lines.
Each double page spread has a few pictures, so the dictionary is colorful and fun.
Many of the words have example sentences, for further explanation and understanding.
Irregular verb tenses are also given (in red type) for verb words.
There are many other features, such as a nice section explaning the various parts of speech and even a secton of picture pages containing the months of the year, animals, numbers, parts of the body, etc.Hope this helps!

We've used the American Heritage Student Dictionary for several years now and really like it. It has all the words we need, an easy to read font, etc. I like it so much I just ordered their thesaurus and am pleased with it too!
