My dd just finished Saxon 7/6. She did fine with 7/6 but did not like Saxon; it drove her batty. We had planned for her to use TT pre-algebra in 6th gr (next year) since I have TT Algebra on the shelf which she could use in 7th. Anyway, due to unexpected events, I cannot afford to purchase TT pre-algebra new and have not seen it very often used. The couple of times I saw it used it was $150.

So if you were looking for a thorough math program to prepare your student for algebra, to make sure there weren't any gaps and the foundation was strong, with a reasonable price tag, what would you use?

She has never struggled with math. It's her favorite subject. Thanks.

How about Dolciani Pre-Algebra: An Accelerated Course? Many on this board have said it's excellent. I plan to use it with my daughter.

which is what we're using. I suggest CLE math grade 6 or 7. Join the CLE yahoo group to see samples.

clp.org is their website but it's not very good Call CLE about placement tests.

What's the difference between the Dolciani Pre-Algebra and Mathematics Structure and Method Course 1 and 2.

My older dd used one of these books (cannot remember which) with K12 some years back. I remember it being rigorous and thorough, but that dd struggled mightily with math of any kind. It might work for this dd.

Would Saxon 7/6 prepare you for the Dolciani book?

Thanks,
Janet

I just did a search on Dolciani Pre-Algebra and Mathematics Structure and Method. I think I'm in over my head in trying to choose a math book. I wish I could package my dd up, send her off to one of you mathy moms, have her examined and sent back with a prescription!!!

Anywho, back to reality. It appears the Math Structure and Method 1 and 2 comprise a 2 yr. pre-algebra course. So I take it that the pre-algebra book moves more quickly? How do non-math moms do with Dolciani? When my older dd used it, I had the teacher guides from K12. I don't remember any problems. I would want a solutions manual.

My original hope was to get Chalkdust. Even if you can find it used, it's pricey. So then we settled on TT Pre-Algebra and Algebra for 6th and 7th as a preparation for high school math. But TT is pricey, too. Probably at that time we would use a co-op or a tutor.

And to top it off, she likes math. It's her favorite subject. I've never had a child that 'liked' math. Loathe would sum it up for my older two. Argh!

I looked at CLE and joined the loop. It reminds me somewhat of Saxon in the way it jumps around. Maybe I'm wrong. The samples are hard to view. The price is good, though. (I'm considering it for my younger two.)

Math is driving me nuts. Sorry for the long rant; thinking out loud.

Janet,

The Pre-Algebra book is not the same as the Algebra Structure and Method. The Pre-Algebra is something you would do before Structure and Method Books 1 & 2. You could post again specifically asking about this. I know a few people used this and really like it. You might want to ask about it on the high school board or search the board for old posts.

Best,
Anita

and sticks to one topic at a time. Look at those samples.
