What is a legitimate, free service?
Haven't seen ours since we moved several years ago.

Yes, we do check ours about once a year. In the last several years-- a law has been enacted that you can receieve one free credit report a year from all three credit bureaus. Here is a link to their information: Annual Credit Report (https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp)
HTH!

Absolutely...but I didn't until I found out my dh's identity had been stolen. Now I watch very carefully!

Thanks for that website! Do you order all three credit reports at one time and compare them?

You are more than welcome! I actually order them one at a time and at different times of the year so we can keep an eye on our credit throughout the year. HTH!

So: you can get one from EACH company once per year?
And, do you check yours and dh's at the same time? Or are they linked together?

We use annualcreditreport.com to get a free credit report. Since you can order one from each of the three credit bureaus, we order one every 3 or 4 months -- using a different credit bureau for the report each time.
Did you know you can opt-out of prescreened credit card offers permanently? https://www.optoutprescreen.com/?rf=t
We did this and now we don't get any credit card offers at home! Yay!
And of course, there's the Do Not Call list at https://www.donotcall.gov/register/Reg.aspx. Registration lasts only 5 years, so it wouldn't hurt to re-register all your phone numbers now and be set until 2013!

We once had an entry on ours that said we had taken a loan out in 1976 - that would have been at a rather tender age. LOL
All kinds of errors can end up on your report. We're checking twice a year, also due to the fact that 2 years ago, my purse was stolen with all kinds of credit cards in it. Cards were deactivated but have checked carefully ever since.

I use the same site mentioned here. I check my husband's and mine annually. I even checked our 17 year old's last year just to make sure some extended family didn't do something with his social security #.

Yes, you can get one from EACH company - once per year FREE! I usually get mine and dh at the same time but you could do them at different times if you prefer. The reports are done individually-- not together.

I didn't know about the opt out website. Thanks for these website addresses! I have bookmarked all of them for future use.
