Is anyone familiar with home warranty policies you can take out (for as much as $40/month or so) to cover the repair (or replacement if ultimately needed of a like model) of major appliances, electrical, plumbing, heating, air, etc) on your home? We got a call yesterday from company XYZ describing this to us and, honestly, it sounded interesting except just the day before I'd been told by our REA that that particular company had been removed from their list of HW companies to promote because they'd made a bad name for themselves. This caused me to wonder if other companies are out there that offer something similar and if any of you had utilized this?

I've gotten extended warranties on a few major appliances at the time of purchase, but nothing like what this sounds like. I think I'd want to check it out more before doing something like that - esp. maybe check out if there are more reliable companies out there.

I would never buy something from someone who called me. I have only purchased them on majorly expensive ones, and it was worth it on a couple, like a fridge from Sears, because they came out to clean it and service it each year, and heat pump, things like that. Depending on how old your house is, you may be able to purchase something from the builder, and our electric company now offers something on so many things, electric, plumbing, heat and a/c, sewer line (which you are responsible and we had to replace when I was pregnant for more than $6,000), +++. We have Dominion, but I would check with yours.

but that was through Maytag. I would never purchase something like you describe. It sounds like a scam. But I am very suspicious.

Our agent gave us one as a gift when we bought our townhouse 3 years ago. We are offering one with the sale of said townhouse and the sellers "gave" us one with the house we just bought. All of these have gone through the realtor. I would not get one from someone calling on the phone.

Same here. We haven't used it yet, but we keep hoping one of the applicances will die so we CAN use it! LOL

But, yea, I wouldn't go with a company that called me!

Good luck!

My parents have had a home warranty for several years. They pay a set amount each year and the have one of the higher packages that will replace almost any appliance. Over the years they have had a several items replaced or serviced. it has truly paid off for them.

We have sold two houses and included one in each sale. We paid less than 500 and it came out in the closing costs. It covered items for one year.

I would be cautious of using someone who called you. Instead I would ask your realtor whom they would recommend.

Yes, we will be including a 12 month warranty with the home we're selling 7/25. This that I got a phone call about is for longterm - I guess same principle just monthly fee for longterm coverage. I'll have to ask my REA which company they recommend.
