What reading level is CHOW?

Anyone know what reading level this is?

My oldest has been reading it.

It's used in Calvert's 4th grade and the student is expected to read it themself.

Yep. Average 4th grade. The program is made for 4th graders. I'm always surprised to see families using it for children in K, 1, 2 grades. I think that 3rd is the lowest one should go. Because younger children cannot appreciate it or understand alot of it at a younger age.

Well....My oldest is 6yo. He definitely can read it and understand it. I think it depends on a child's reading or comprehension level and not so much the age.

Even if a child cannot read it, he or she might still be able to comprehend it. Mom would know best. Wish I could find a sample of the text to show you.

Sometimes, I preview this and have him read it (just as I try to do with anything I give him to read independently). Then, we discuss it. Other times, I read it aloud to him and add my commentary as I see fit. I think we'd still be doing basically the same thing even if he were a 4th grader (by age) first reading CHOW.

We got CHOW because it was recommended by a private school teacher we respect. He was leading a free class this year and I couldn't pass on the opportunity. The class was geared to 3rd-6th graders, so we just tried it to see how it would work. The 6yo did just fine.

my girls are 8 entering 3rd grade, they read about a grade level ahead. We will be using CHOW in SL core 2 this year and I wondered if it would be something we could take turns reading aloud.

I'll just have to try it out and see how it goes.

I think it would work well for that. The reading level shouldn't be a problem for them at all. My only concern would be that you'll want to read along and discuss it with them -- but that can be accomplished easily by having them take turns reading aloud.

:iagree: Our dd used this last year; she was 6. She had no trouble comprehending it, but then, we also read it together and discussed it as we went along.
