I have a son going into seventh grade next year and I am looking for some recommendations for a good program. We have tried Vocabulary from Classical Roots and Wordly Wise unsucessfully with my oldest child and I am not sure what program to use. Quite frankly, those are the two that I see mentioned most often and I am overwhelmed by all of Rainbow Resource's choices. I wish I could just sit down and physically look at these programs and compare them side by side. I would appreciate any direction. Thanks in advance.

Why do you think those two failed?

If you have a visual learner, Vocabulary Cartoons are great. My middle dd reads them for free choice reading and thanked me profusely for buying them for her.

We used Wordly Wise as well and stopped using it after
I recieved a recommendation from a friend who is an English teacher.

1. Make a list of vocabulary from what is currently being taught from history, science, literature. Focus on those words, because they are being used in a wider context.

2. Create a short vocabulary list of 10 words for the month that you want to add. Right definitions, right them in sentences using the part of speech properly, and then require the new words be used in conversation, and in papers. That can be fun if one is in a silly mood.

Just a thought ~

We enjoy vocabulary cartoons too! Retention is much better. I have my daughter come up with a sentence for each word.:D

Wordly Wise didn't work for us either...

I thought it was pretty good, and better in my opinion than Vocab from Classical Roots in that it was a bit easier for my dc, but it's basically the same kind of thing as most vocab workbooks would be. I liked it, though. Book A, if I remember correctly, would be about a 7th grade level (but you better check for yourself on that).

You might want to try and see if you can look at a sample online, maybe try CBD's site.

Hope you find just what you are looking for!

VfCR and WW both bombed with my kids too.

I have my 7th and 9th grader working through Word Roots cd-roms. The cd-rom version doesn't cost much more than the workbooks and you can re-use the cd-rom with all of your kids. It's a lot more engaging as well.

My 9th grader also had vocabulary built-in to her grammar program (Hake Grammar), but she finished that last week. She also has built-in vocabulary in US History-based Writing Lessons, but she's already known all the vocabulary for that program.

My 7th grader has additional vocabulary built-in to Fix-it Grammar. She's also working through Megawords. That program has been great for building her vocabulary. She doesn't pick up meanings in context very well.
