I never really watch my dd doing it, so I'm not sure. I think they have their own explanations, certainly not anything as nitpicky or tight as SWR. They do have a rules/explanations time after the pre-test though.
Just for your trivia, today dd typed her first non-fiction paragraph ALL BY HERSELF!!! Ok, I helped her do the page set-up and get the fonts right for the title and changing to the body. But the rest, she was able to do all herself and not take too long about it either. I credit that to her time spent on the calvert spelling cd's and the typing practice they give as a side bonus. So even if you don't turn out to love them for spelling, they're still worthwhile, kwim?

No. Not that I can recall. The spelling rules are in the spelling book that comes with the Calvert curriculum. The CD really is meant to be a supplement to the spelling program for practice.

The CD wasn't rule based but at the time, that is exactly what my daughter needed. She had studied tons of phonics and most of her spelling mistakes were from over using phonics rules. (We used the sixth grade CD).

that is a very interesting observation because my dd seems to get messed up when you bring rules into the thinking. She does much better just visualizing the word, which makes me wonder if I should do dictation for spelling (ie: spelling wisdom) along with the cd to supplement...and just leave the rules for a while?
Check out the For Sale Forum as there is Calvert Grade 3 for sale.

PS After a certain point, working on the visual aspect of spelling words greatly helped my daughter. We liked the Calvert spelling CD.
