View Full Version : Grammar Program to use between FLL and R&S3??

My 7yo finished FLL this year. I was going to go straight to R&S3 in the fall, but then I realized that if I wait one more year to do that, I could have my almost 6 yo join him in that book next fall, when she'll be in second grade. I'd rather combine them for grammar at that point, than do grammar with them each separately. But, I do want to do some grammar this year with him.... any suggestions for a good grammar resource that would be useful when used for just one year? This would be for second grade.

How about R&S 2?
That's what I'm planning on using with my 7yo 2nd grader. We went through most of FLL last year. I figure if it's review, that's fine, it will just cement those grammer definitions better.

B&N carries these at under $6 a book, we've used levels 1, 2, and 3.

I have an copy of the old spiral bound LLATL. I was thinking of doing this after FLL 2 and before FLL 3. DS is young and is flying through FLL. It looks like a nice review of the concepts covered in FLL1/2 but covered in a different way.

Bumping this up... thank you for those who've responded, but I don't think I've found what I'm looking for. (I will check out Flashkids next time I'm at Barnes and Noble, though; I couldn't find any samples online.) I'm looking for a simple, visually appealing resource that will serve two purposes this year: to help ds (8 this fall) remember the grammar that he learned last year in FLL, and introduce dd (6 this fall) to those concepts. I'm not worried about finding something that's going to teach them tons and tons of grammar, because they'll both have years of Rod and Staff ahead to do that. I just want to introduce some grammar, and maintain what ds has already learned.
They are both very visual learners (FLL was not the best choice for ds), so I'd like a nice looking, visually appealing resource meant for young children (grades 1-2ish). A nice looking, effective workbook might be a good option. Any suggestions?
Thank you!

Take a look at some of these links:

Also for a different approach you could try http://writing-tales.com/. Your older son could do the full program and your dd could do the activities which introduce grammar. Here is a thread http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20438&highlight=writing+tales with a link to a blog which shows some samples of the games that teach grammar.

It sounds like just what you are looking for. My son just finished FLL 1/2 and we are going to go through some of this book before starting FLL 3. I just love it and wish I had found it with my other two!
Language Smart by Critical Thinking Press (http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=471002&netp_id=435334&event=ESRCN&item_code=WW&view=covers)
This is the 2nd grade level book, but it is a little advanced. They have two lower levels also.

What about evan-moor daily language review (http://www.evan-moor.com/Series.aspx?CurriculumID=3&ClassID=188&P=1&SeriesID=35)? That might be something to consider. Have you considered mad-libs for some fun?

We've used the Easy Grammar Pink book (for 2nd/3rd grade, used to be called Daily Guided TEaching and Review) - it might fit the bill for what you're looking for...gentle, easy daily lessons going over parts of speech, usage, and mechanics. Just the basics. I think both of your kids could do this - the older independently.
Sorry, it's not super attractive visually - just black and white text. But it is simple to use and would get the job done.

Yes, this is what I was looking for!!! And it's FREE!! I wasn't expecting that! In case anyone else is interested, this is a link to a free online Grammar and Writing Handbook by Scott Foresman. You can choose the grade you are interested in, and the entire book is available to download and print out.
It is nice looking, with pictures on most of the worksheets, and has clear, easy to read and well-spaced text (which is important to my ds). The content looks solid and well organized. Since you can choose whichever pages you want, and whichever grades you want, I'll be able to print from both the 1st and 2nd grade books for dd and ds, so that they'll both have some written work on their level.
Great! Thanks so much!
