I just watched this documentary tonight-downloaded it from NetFlix. Is anyone else upset about GMO foods and implications with our kids? I have to admit, I never thought about it much but this really has me thinking. I'd like to hear what others think.

I do think that I'm going to try to get back into gardening this summer, probably just container gardening but it's a start, and learn to save my own seeds. My mom has done this for years, she makes it sound very easy. I've got to be able to teach my kids how to grow their own foods and save seeds. Has anyone heard of the suicide gene in seeds before? I hadn't before this documentary. It's all new to me but I'm going to err on the side of slight paranoia and learn to save seeds.

I saw it. It really bothers me too and I think seed saving is an excellent idea! I have recently heard cloned cows are in the food supply too. I guess they didn't keep track of some. I think it is very scary how we are "experimenting" with our food supply. I try to buy as local as possible so I know what we are eating. Not always, possible on a budget, but there are lots of good ways to eat healthy AND cheap. A garden is one of those ways. Inexpensive way to have organic, nonGM food.

One thing that gets me about GM corn, is that every once in a while a magazine or book will run a list of foods that are okay to buy inorganic. Now, they almost always have corn on the list. Yes, if the pesticide is in the corn, then they don't have to spray the field with pesticides, but that doesn't mean it is safe to eat. Didn't The Future of Foods say that almost all of the corn produced in the US that isn't organic is GM? Most soy is too.

We love documentaries here. Just thought of a great post!

The terminator seed was what really really bothered me. Scary stuff.

Actually, the cloned cows (and I believe other meat animals) are not a mistake that was not kept rack of. The FDA made it legal in the last few weeks. There will be no labelling. Generally, I am OK with this since I know intellectually that they are the same as the originals. Then the episode of Eureka with the cloned chicken breats that make everyone stupid creeps into my head.

Julpost, What was the name of the documentary?
What is the suicide gene? I do remember a friend talking about the sterile seeds of pepper plants in the store, they can grow but not fruit if I remember correctly. Is that the same thing?
What were the implications of GM food?

I have never trusted GM food or Monsanto - the same company who made agent orange and saccharine now making our food. I believe that less is more with most things in life.....go organic!

I like to think of Monsanto as Monsatan.

And if the sheep in this world want to eat GM and cloned food - I say let them, but label it please for those of us who choose to keep it real and want to avoid it. Who wants fish genes in tomatoes or sick corn? Yuck.

I did once read that Frito Lay was commited to non GM-corn.

LOL...Do you read Barefoot Meandering? Kathy Jo made a great "Monsatan" logo. I just looked quickly and can't find it to link. Pttht.
