Does anyone use this? I tried to do a search and the words are too common and it pulls up everything but. I am a SWR user, but I am intrigued by the simplification of this.

What do you like/dislike about this--and can you comment on it in relation to SWR? I looked on their FAQ and they had some comparison, but I wanted to hear it from someone who has used it or used both.

Thanks,

Felicia

Here is a link to the website. I have just started this program with me ds10 because he is so behind in reading and spelling. We are going pretty quickly through the first book. I ordered the first and second book because I thought this might be the case for him. I just wanted to go back over basics and fill in any gaps that are missing. He is loving it and asks if we can do spelling first. He seems to enjoy the simplicity of it but is retaining more than I thought he would. There is some initial preping for you to do with cutting out the cards. I just used my paper cutter and it went relatively quickly. It was definitely worth the amount of prep on my part to see him actually enjoying spelling. He now also brings me books and wants to read. There is no price I could put on that.

I haven't used SWR. We used Bob Jones Spelling before. I switched by dd to Megawords when I switched my ds to AAS. He will go onto Megawords after we go through AAS. I only wished I had found this program sooner.

HTH and good luck!

I did a search for AAS and narrowed the search down a bit. I found a post I did a couple days ago about AAS. Here is a copy/paste:

I've got to swear by All About Spelling. I've tried a workbook format, a word wall/lists format, and a second workbook format. Dd is a hands-on learner and those letter tiles that she can get her hands on, along with the rules and format of AAS finally clicked for her.

We do spelling every day for about 15 minutes. If I remember without getting up and finding the book from last year we did a week looked like this:

Monday - introduce the rule and the new spelling words
Tuesday - practice spelling with the letter tiles (10 words)
Wednesday - practice spelling with the letter tiles (10 more words)
Thursday - practice on paper
Friday - spelling test

A couple times a year we pull out the review cards and review everything to date. Toward the end of the year that took a bit more than 15 minutes. During review time I used the entire week to check on retention of the rules, words, letter sounds, pretty much everything she had learned.

The last week of the year I gave dd a 5 day test. 35 words a day for 4 days and the last day was a rule test. She only got one word wrong. It was a proud moment for me since she struggled for so long with spelling.

We're using it and love it! I just started a few weeks ago for my dd(7). She really needs to learn the rules of spelling! It's helping her so much. I can see her stop and think briefly when she's spelling a word that she's unsure of, instead of just guessing. I love how the tests are sentences to dictate instead of a list of words. This helps review past words. We also review from our box of cards before each lesson. My dd enjoys practicing spelling in different ways from day-to-day: with the tiles on the board, writing on a dry erase board, and then writing sentences on paper. It's something different each day. It's working so much better for her that the workbook program that we used previously.

Google hint: Add the word "homeschool" to any search.

All about spelling homeschool

puts you right on the money.

I'm glad someone asked this, I've been wondering about AAS too.

Has anyone experience with AAS vs. Spelling Power? Those are the two I'm debating between.

How old are your kids? I think AAS is better overall... It's geared for beginning or poor spellers. SP was frustrating for my natural speller, but I don't know that a poor speller would be best helped by the program either. I think the reason most moms like SP is that it lasts for all grades, doesn't place kids in any "grade", etc.

With AAS you'll get much better rules-based instruction, IMHO, but it's very expensive.

I recently switched from SWR to AAS. We've only done the first couple of lessons, but I think I'm really going to like it. It's definitely more "pick up and go" than SWR. I didn't feel like I had to spend loads of time figuring out what it was I was supposed to do. It is more expensive...but I think it's worth it.

I used All About Spelling with dd last year, and we are planning to use it again this year. She loves it. It is very easy to use, and I am even learning a lot (about the reasons behind spelling rules) using the program. It is easy for a child to work through at his/her own pace. DD is a very natural speller and advanced linguistically, so she flew through 2.5 books last year. We will finish up Level 3 this year, and hopefully move on to Level 4 (if it's published?). I love it that she is learning rules and reasoning behind the rules. She is not just memorizing individual words. So, she can generalize the rule to be able to spell a lot more words than just the ones included on the list for the week. I don't have any experience with other programs, since this is the only one we've tried. But we are very pleased with it.
