How I missed that book as a child, I have no idea. I just finished reading outloud to my kids and we all LOVED it!!! Thanks to those who encouraged me to read it outloud to the kids a while ago!!!

Crissy, I think it was you who caused me to put it on my list in the first place, so thanks!

It is one of my all time favorite books. I can't wait until my boys are older and I can make them enjoy it with me!

It was my favourite book. Good idea about reading it aloud to dc. We'll try that this year.

I must lead a very sheltered life. I had never heard of this book, but you have inspired me. I just ordered it on paperbackswap.com. Thanks.:)

One of my very favorites too.

At one time it was also an animated movie on t.v. I think--that was well done too. Not sure if it is available.

I have *heard* of this book, but I do not know anything about it. For what ages is it appropriate? It seems like it is usually suggested for older children. Why? Does it go "beyond" the story it tells in some way? Someone please enlighten me about this book.
TIA

I read it recently. It has several follow-up stories to what happened to the Watership Down rabbits, and then lots of stories that rabbits "tell" about El Ahrairah (spelling?) and other stories bunnies enjoy. It was very enjoyable.

I loved Watership Down, I first read it in 6th grade. I've read it a couple times as an adult, and still enjoy it. My DS is now 6th grade, but not yet ready for such a long book.

Here is a little about the book:
Book Description:
One of the most beloved novels of our time, Richard Adams's Watership Down takes us to a world we have never truly seen: to the remarkable life that teems in the fields, forests and riverbanks far beyond our cities and towns. It is a powerful saga of courage, leadership and survival; an epic tale of a hardy band of adventurers forced to flee the destruction of their fragile community...and their trials and triumphs in the face of extraordinary adversity as they pursue a glorious dream called "home." Watership Down is a remarkable tale of exile and survival, of heroism and leadership...the epic novel of a group of adventurers who desert their doomed city, and venture forth against all odds on a quest for a new home, a sturdier future.

Here is a review:
I recently gave a copy of this to a friend who said to me, "Rabbits? For years I thought this was about a boat!" Guess she'd never seen the cover of the book. *g*

That said, this ranks right up there with Betty Smith's 'A Tree Grows in Brooklyn' as one of my all time favourite books. Who would have throught a book about RABBITS would be engaging?

It was a very emotional read - sorrow, anger, joy and every emotion in between was felt as I read this book. I have vague memories of the animated movie and lots of blood - so I had been scared to read this book even though I had wanted to do so for several years. I'm thrilled that I read it now and found it a wonderful read - a fantastic story of survival against all odds. (Yes, I might hunt down the movie just to see it 'in action'!)

I got this information from paperbookswap.com on this book.

The sequel is called: Tales from Watership Down

Book Description:

Return Again to the Warren for
the All-New Adventures of Fiver,
Hazel, BigWig, Dandelion, and
The Legendary El-Ahrairah.

In one of the most enduring classics of contemporary literature, author Richard Adams enthralled millions of readers by creating a glorious world of danger and discovery at once uniquely strange and strikingly similar to our own. Come back now to this remarkable society hidden beneath the tall grasses and open fields; to old friends and new heroes whose courage and tenacity are tested at every turn by predatory nature and the short-sighted cruelties of man. Come back to the excitement and enchantment, to the heartsoaring wonder of a place called Watership Down.

...but I read Watership Down eighteen times when I was a teenager. :blushing: I think I cried every time, too.

I was just wondering the other day if my kids would be old enough to hear it as a read aloud. I would probably cry, but my dc are used to that.

I watched the animated movie recently from Hollywood video. It is excellent, and brings back reading the book. I'd say it is pretty faithful to the book, although they did add in a couple psychadelic bunny tunes (kinda reminds me of that song in Dumbo), which definitely match the emotion in the book, but cut out some of the detail in the plot.

Absolutely one of my favorites too! It hadn't occured to me to use it as a read-aloud...great idea! I'll probably wait until dd is a little older.
