I am wondering if anyone has used HSP Science or Harcourt. We are using LLB right now and it just doesn't seem to fit.

We plan on continuing to use it until we find something we like better. HSP and Harcourt are recommended by our academy, but I haven't ready any reviews about it.

thanks,
Liz

I will be using Harcourt Brace Science CA for this coming school year with my girls. I'll be using this text also to teach Gr 3 - 4 kids in our homeschool group. I used Gr 5 with ds a while back with Rainbow Science and it appealed enough to me for me to consistently do it The explanations are plenty and thorough and it doesn't dumb down the info. . There is the accompanying workbook that goes with the text and while it can be busywork at times, it doesn't bother ds at that time. I have the TM that I borrowed from our charter school and this helped me a lot in planning and suggestions for experiments.

I plan on using this text to teach notetaking and how to answer open-ended comprehension questions in a form of essay. I'm excited. I like this text but it depends on your taste. In fact, I like the McGraw Hill text also that I used with my girls when we did Calvert 3 last year.

The Harcourt Brace TM has suggestions on additional living books to read with the corresponding topics.

My dh is mostly doing science and he really likes the textbook approach. Since for all other subjects we use living books, I don't mind having a text here and there!

I will definitely check it out!

I use Harcourt Science for 3 through 5th grade. I like the level of information and the way the book is laid out. Threre are a good many experiements and demonstrations that are easy for homeschoolers to adapt.
The check questions and section questions are good to help direct student reading.

I don't have the boys do note taking until 6th grade but they do look up vocabulary, draw diagrams and write up lab reports.

We are going to use Harcourt Science Grade 4 this year. For the last 2 years, we've been using Apologia Science but my son requested a different curriculum this year. In my opinion, it is a great science textbook compared to others. Each lesson has an experiment/activity to do. Lessons are short but not dumb down. Just enough for the grade level. There is about 3 to 4 lessons each Chapter and a review at the end. And at the end of each lesson, there is a recommended book to read or writing topic to write about. Like what they say, it has a workbook, if you want to do that. We have used BJU as a supplement before but I like this better. We will still use Apologia, but as our Science reader. I hope this helps.
