View Full Version : So, at what age do you let your kiddos keep school stuff in their rooms?

If ever?? Or, do you keep it all in one central location forever and ever, or until graduation, whichever comes first?
I have 2 teens and an almost teen left schooling, and today, ds12 moved his computer and school books to his room. I do love what this has done for my office/schoolroom, but I wonder if it's too soon. I mean I still have the timeline up in here, and have all the "cheats," like the Preposition poster (albeit one that is obviously lacking some prepositions), algebra hints, big number line, etc. I mean, what will they do when they need those items? Will they actually have to come from their respective rooms to utilize them?
What do you do about such dilemmas?

I have small kids so forgive me for asking, but why is this a dilemma?
From what you posted, the only thing I would be wary about is the computer (with internet access) in the room. I'm not sure how I feel about that yet.

the computers go, that is an issue, but I can make the computer inaccessible by plugging the satellite modem directly into my computer.
I don't know. I was just wondering what others did...

Never! :-)
Seriously, too many necessary books/school items get lost in the wilderness that is called "the bedroom". So, everything is in one room - affectionately known as the "torture chamber". Each student has a fabric bucket/tote thingamajiggy. Even my oldest who is taking all concurrent courses this year has a big ol' bucket in the same room for his school books.
I just hate it when they can't find their math because they took it to their rooms to work on it! Can you guess what my fellas' rooms look like - ARGH! I apologize now to their future wives - I *did* try to civilize them!

and I'd let my ds's if their room was on the same floor as the schoolroom/dining room. I just don't have the space for all her books AND her brothers AND my teacher stuff AND... She keeps them all on one bookshelf and is good about putting them away when she is done.

DS (8) has a nice big desk in his room with a shelf across the back, and all his schoolbooks "live" there... although most of his work he still does in the dining room... I'd love for him to work at his desk in his room, but he likes to be in the middle of things.
There's a laptop in his room but no internet access -- we have a no-internet-in-bedrooms rule for all of us, not just him! :)

His subjects that require the computer (like TT) or me (Omnibus), typically stay downstairs in the office, but it doesn't matter to me. He is organized and takes care of most of his school on his own anyways, so I don't really have to much to do with it. We have discussions about topics, corrections and instructions (only what he needs a little help with) together but he does all of his own grading and monitoring. We don't have computers in the kids rooms right now, but when we did (and, will again in the future) we didn't allow internet access on them.
DD9 keeps everything in the office but often takes her work to her room. Her work usually starts with a visit to me for instruction so it is easier for her to start in the office, on the same floor of the house that I am on.

Well, since our school room is in the same room as 2 of the girl's bedroom...I guess now. I require the girls to keep their books in their desks. They do most of their work in that room, too. If books are removed they must be put back by the end of school. It's never really been a problem for us, though.
I agree with everyone else about the internet acess. Even a child doing an innocent search can come up with horrific things. Defineately monitor or remove.
