View Full Version : Any suggested Saxon-Singapore teaching schedules? And what about Miquon?

I used Saxon K with dd1 last year and now we've moved on to Saxon 1. However, after talking to my cousin-in-law (if such a term exists), who, as an elementary school teacher suggested that students of Saxon Math turn in low CRCT scores, I've decided to supplement with Singapore.

I'm curious, for those of you who use Saxon and supplement with Singapore... what sort of schedule or plan do you use for teaching both?

Also, a dear friend mentioned Miquon to me today (she always does this to me :glare:). Does anyone supplement Saxon with Miquon? And, if so, same scheduling question. And... why Miquon over Singapore?

Thanks for your help as I work through this dilemma!

I like Saxon and Singapore together. I don't try to coordinate them because they're so different from one another, and I'm using them both for different reasons. We just do the next lesson in each one, each day.

We don't try to line them up either. But we use Singapore a level behind Saxon. So, we start Singapore 1 when we start Saxon 2.

We also do Singapore and Saxon (at least up until this year - my kids just finished Saxon 7/6 and are begging me to give it up - it is getting way too easy and repetitive, especially compared to Singapore, and that is with skipping about half of each problem set), with Singapore a level behind Saxon. This year we finished Saxon 76 and Singapore 5B. We only do the practice problems and "Mom selected" or just the odd problems in the Problem Set. We also do one lesson in Singapore, or some word problems in CWP. It has worked well until recently...:willy_nilly:

We do Miquon and Singapore, no Saxon. We used to do RightStart (which I love, but way too teacher intensive for my situation). Here's a schedule that shows the Singapore concepts and how to supplement with Miquon. Perhaps it will be useful in determining how to use these two as supplement to Saxon.

Edited to Add:
I use the chart to correlate lessons, then I plan out about three weeks at a time. Since there is no direct teaching/text in Miquon we use the Singapore text, manipulatives, and suggestions from the Lab Annotations (for Miquon), to teach the concepts. Then dd completes assigned pages in the Singapore Workbook and the Miquon book (we're doing 2-3 pages right now because some of it is review). I try to alternate so she works in singapore workbook one day and the miquon book the next. I am thinking of ordering the Intensive Practice and Challenging Word problems (as per recommendations on this board) for the next book (Singapore 1B). Right now we don't need them.
