I am having a big bedroom swap, for the second time this year.:tongue_smilie:
The doodlebug wants to sleep downstairs near her brothers, but not in either of their rooms, obviously. So she is going to get my current classroom for a bedroom and the school stuff is moving upstairs to our rec room.
My current classroom is painted a deep red, has wood laminate floors and in general I tried to create a cozy, library feel.
The room we are moving into has some very funky sloping ceilings and is in general a challenging space. I do not believe the deep color scheme would work up there. So I want to go fun and funky in theme, but it has to bridge the taste differences between a very conservative 13 year old boy (who chose tan and black for his bedroom colors), a fun and funky 10 year old girl and an 8 year old boy who bristles at the thought of anything that could possibly be construed as a feminine color (pink, purple, yellow....these are girl colors according to him)
Before I do anything else, I need a color scheme. I would like a scheme of 2-3 colors.
I am just not coming up with anything and when I stood in front of paint chips at Lowes I just felt frustrated.

Oh, Kelli, I am so NOT a designer, but I just wanted to say how wonderful it is for you to have a classroom. I'm trying to be good and not be jealous. How about a jungle theme? You could paint lots of nifty animals to appeal to the boys (lions and tigers and such) and some exotic flora in pinks and purples for your girl. They might sell decals for that sort of stuff - I've never checked.

We are in the midst of decorating our new school room. I went with denim blue and red. I painted the walls a soothing washed blue and there are bright accents of white, darker blue, and bright red throughout the room.

How about green, blue and brown -- with a nature theme?

I like this organizing system (http://www.target.com/b/ref=sc_iw_r_1_0/?node=676255011) in the white laminate with the brown, blue and green bins and drawers. I am thinking white walls as the space is very dark with only one window and those sloping walls. I would like to find a table at a thrift store and paint it white with green, blue and brown accents. I can fit one of the bookcases I have in my current room up there, I could paint it to match as well.
What do you think?

I think your pland sounds great because I was just going to suggest:
Option 1:chocolate brown, sky blue, and apple or moss greeen or
Option 2: orange, sky blue, and apple or moss green
I love those colors. Or... our schoolroom is our kitchen which is red, turquoise, and lime green- sounds funky, but it works.
Good Luck.

I think it sounds great! What about lighting, though? You mentioned it's a dark space, and white paint only goes so far if there isn't enough light source. Overhead lighting? Lamps? They'll need plenty of light to read well and stay alert!

There is already an overhead light in white and chrome. I think with this color pallette chrome will look good, so I thought I would find some chrome clip on lamps that they can clip to their part of the work table.
I like some chairs from Ikea, but I wonder if shipping would be cost prohibitive?
Also, I would like to have some beanbags in a corner for reading time.

I vote for orange. It's supposed to be a soothing color. I love the funky look of IKEA. Maybe white as an accent. Maybe with some apple green.

This is a neat homeschool space (http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/ah_organizing_photos/article/0,,HGTV_3139_5651477_04,00.html).
I like that it is a bit more grownup. I wan to get that same feeling so that in a couple of years the kids aren't feeling like they are in a kindergarden room.

I am painting our classroom next week. I am using an ocean color theme (not an ocean theme-just the colors). I am using some muted blue/green colors from this paint line (available at Home depot here). I am using very clean lined furniture from IKEA in light birch and flooring in a mahogany. The colors in the first link are a little different from the store but to give you an idea, I am using colors similar to the last 3 colors, in the top row of the waterscape line in this linked view. The colors I am using are a darker green/blue (to paint picture frames and accent pieces) a mid blue/green for the walls and a light blue/green for the ceiling, The colors are very calming and look incredible with a rich tan (think sand), brown and black. The accessories in the room are various shades of blue, green, and just a smidge of violet. I am imagining an ocean at dusk color theme with rich colors towards the ground but the lighter walls and ceiling.

I have a 9x13 rug in the various blue/green colors that is a rag weave to tie the colors together.
This link is just an idea of what the paint colors and accessory colors will look like together.

I like your colors!!
I am thinking I could make beanbag chairs and I think I like this fabric (http://www.fabric.com/home-decor-fabric-polka-dot-fabric-spirodots-chocolate-natural.aspx).
This is fun. Wonder who is going to pay for all this?

I love the whimsy of the polka-dot but in a masculine theme! That is a great tie in fabric between the little boys and the big ones.
I have been saving for a while to do this room! One thing I like about the color theme is that I am purposefully using various shades of blue and green, tan and rich brown. It makes is easier to get accessories on the cheap with out having to get every thing in the same colors to coordinate. It is nice for dd to have the softer shades of blue, green and rich violet to be a bit girly, but still coordinate with ds's richer blues, greens and light tans.
Good luck with your room!
