Have any of you used Sequential Spelling with a 3rd grader? I have heard that it should be started when the dc is in 4th grade and reading on a 4th grade level.

We started using Sequential Spelling in the third grade but DD was reading very well. It starts out simply but is based on patterns and the words get big very quickly. They have the first 8 days available for trial on their website. If you aren't sure, maybe start there and see how it goes.

I waited until my dd was 4th grade, but she is dyslexic. I can see possibly using it with a 3rd grader who is reading very well, but there are 25 words on each list and I think that could easily be overwhelming to a 3rd grader.

I have used it with my then 8yodd, but I can say she did not get nearly as much out of it as her then 10yo brother.

I am currently using it with my 2nd grade ds. (I must have missed the grade level recommendation:eek:) He isn't bothered by the number of words- and I am very pleased with his progress. He has become a more confident, fluent reader through using it. I have several friends who are using it with their dc in ages ranging from 7-11, and they all are happy with it. I love this program!

I'm using it with my 2nd grader and he's doing great. And the child is NOT a natural speller. Quite the opposite. This program has helped his bunches! If the # of words is too intimidating, there's nothing saying you can't just give half the list at a time or even skip words that you know he knows the pattern for. I am so glad I found this program.

I'm using it with my 1st grader and he's doing great. I only give him half the list at a time. Next year I will give him all the words on the list. My older ds has used it from 1st grade too. I love this program!

We've barely gotten started with it (3rd week,) but I feel as if we aren't getting it.

Did you do the program exactly as written? Or, have you found other ways? Do you continue with the pattern of asking the kids to write the word first, then writing it in different colors, then having the kids correct, etc...

For 1st - 4th, I do the program exactly as they say to do it. For 5th and up, I say the word & if they need it I put it in a sentence. They write the word & tell me they got it. I spell it out loud for them. If they got it right we go to the next word. If they get it wrong they correct it. If they need me to respell it I do.
