View Full Version : Do you ever get involved in a thread and just know you shouldn't????

Every now and then I get sucked into a thread that I just know is going to make my stomach turn--and I just can't seem to make myself not click on that link. Horrid lack of control on my part, I suppose. Ugh.

Of course. Only now if I post something enormously stupid, I can go back and edit it down to NOTHING -- so long as no one has replied already and quoted part of it.

have you noticed that you can set your personal preferences to ignore people?:D
I love that feature!
It keeps me out of trouble. I just have some posters on ignore and then I never know what they say and I never have to worry about it and end up responding when I should not. Much better!:)

I posted in a thread for people that don't vaccinate- didn't belong there - and I felt kinda bad about it. Then there was the Creation Museum and again, couldn't help myself since I knew of a funny parody of the place.
I'm kinda new and I'm use to a football message board format that's more ... uh ... nasty and confrontational. 95% male and 80% secular very different place. People around here are too darn nice.

It is seemingly very civil around here, which is kind of nice, but not the norm for us! While I wouldn't use the words 'nasty and confrontational', we can get into heated debates. Just wait.

Your Creation Museum made me smile because the parody guy was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the thread title :)
Oh...and, yes, but I have been trying very hard to behave because I like the people here :) I have changed my mind about pushing post after typing a message many times. It is not like me to hold my toungue on certain topics irl, but I do try here.

I see the creation advice thread bouncing up to the top of page one all the time and it's just like the anti-vaccination thread. I'm oh-so-tempted to go in there and kick the hornets nest. http://www.thestarvingbrain.com/forum/Smileys/default/calvin.gif
But I'm new and I respect people and I'm trying to get along. And every thread around here, it's like I'm the only person who agrees with me. This place has a very different feel than the free-for-all wars of hillarity I'm use to. I'm a drop of testoterone drowing in a sea of uber-friendly estrogen.
I don't know where the boundary limits are and I need this place way more than this place needs me. I love my daughter too much to get banned from this site for being a troublemaker or a troll. So I see the hook dangling there and I wanna bite but it's like "swim away Volty, swim away."

How does that ignore feature work? Do the threads still make sense? Would quotes from an ignored person still show up in other people's posts? I imagine they would... Just curious. Maybe I'll go play with it.

You will just see a box that says This message is hidden because ________ is on your ignore list.
I cannot describe how wonderful it is. :)
You can also have a buddy list, that is people who you want to read. I started to play with that, but the list would have been huge! My ignore list is very, very small.

I do that too. Better safe than sorry. I have a big mouth and I am very opinionated, so I try to keep that under control. The delete key is my favorite! I don't use it often enough, probably.

The thing to do is to start a new thread. That way you don't break board rules, which are pretty clear, and you get the chance to see that you're not the odd man out.
And yes, as message boards go, this one is NICE. The lovely thing about being a (mostly) nice agnostic is that people don't ignore what you say. :D So many of us have a reputation of being snarky and hateful and fulfilling all the stereotypes that believers believe about us. Honey is much more palatable than vinegar.
This also hones our skills of restraint and kindness and civility. And that is a good, good thing. Those skills keep you married longer, IMO. ;)
You will notice that I replied to you in the Creation Museum thread. And I erased it! (Patting myself on the back, I am.)
You might be surprised at how balanced the board is. And whether or not it's majority evangelical or not, it's lovely to come on a board where evangelicals, mainstream Christians, Jews of varying degrees of orthodoxy, Muslims, Pagans, Wiccans, agnostics, and even (gasp!) Unitarians can post in relative harmony. I love it. And I couldn't care less about how much of a minority I am here. Even though I know people pray for me regularly. They know that I pray for them, too. :D

Yeah, if I were on the general board more regularly, that ignore feature would be a wonderful thing!
I really wanted to chip in on the vaccination thing, too. But thankfully I reread the board rules just recently and thought the better of it. But maybe I'll take Pam's advice and just start a new thread....

You forgot me. I get my own catagory. :)
And since I don't bite my tongue, censor my words and basically bring the truth to a discussion, makes me wonder how many people have me on ignore... maybe I could collect "ignore" points as well as "negative" points. Whatcha think?

You are very like those that my preachers told me about when I was young. If people aren't offended by them, they are not pleasing God. I always find it amusing that you have this (proudly, it seems) in common with extreme fundamentalists. ;)
Did you read Garrison Keilor's commentary today?
Nah, you don't get your own category. Unless "undecided" is a category. You're one of us, or you'd be out of here faster than a snowcone melting in Phoenix.

Wait, I'm still on my first cup of coffee--who's pleasing who here? :) And yes, all kidding aside, I AM proud that I can stick up for myself and not back down. If that gives me something in common with the EF's, then so be it. I would never deny them their right to do what they do, just as I would never deny my right to do what I do. :)

I can't watch him. He's weird. Like flakey weird. So, no I didn't. What'd he say?:)

::chants:: oneofusoneofusoneofus... uhhh.... wait, if by "one of us" you mean a homeschooler--yep, that's about all you gots on me sista.. I've still never seen snow, so how fast, exactly, does a snow cone melt in Phoenix? Like Florida fast or faster? ;)
Volty said:And every thread around here, it's like I'm the only person who agrees with me.
Nah, I got people agreeing with me, my problem is none of them want to admit to it. At least not publically.
