We just got home from the Chicago Suzuki Institute, a week-long camp in Deerfield, IL, where we had a wonderful week of encouragement and music training. My kids had five hours/class each day including a lesson time with 2-3 other students, small group, large group, cello band or orchestra, fiddling or cello choir. My niece and nephew, who are younger, had 4 or 5 hours of classes and their "elective" instead of fiddling was a music and movement class that they really liked.

One thing that struck me at the Chicago camp was how many music teachers were there with their children. Is it the sort of thing with homeschooling where there seem to be a lot of teachers working with their own kids?

Last year we went to a fantastic institute at Steven's Point in Wisconsin, which is stronger for violinists. Their program is different, and the kids have 3 classes/day, so there is more time to practice and go to the concerts and other activities of the camp. The Steven's Point one is coming up at the end of July and beginning of August. Information is here:

The website says there is still space for all instruments and all levels. I did meet quite a few homeschoolers in Wisconsin last year. (You might want a hotel there as the people in the non-airconditioned dorm seemed awfully hot!)

Let me know if you go because of this post!
