Why, in you opinion is it so popular with Well Trained Mind readers?
Does it only cover history?

1. It covers history in the same timeframe that WTM does but provides the nitty-gritty of each year moreso than WTM does. You're able to keep the vision that WTM provides with TOG, TOG just helps you accomplish it- sometimes even deeper than WTM suggests.
I see WTM as a skeleton to work from, TOG is the muscle. Plus TOG is what you make of it so if you want to add copywork and other WTM suggestions, it's no big deal. TOG is Christian based though.
2. TOG covers history, geography, literature (with Socratic discussions and Great Books in older years), government, philosophy, art and music, history of science (not science labs, just science within the framework of history-scientists and discoveries), church history and world religions, writing with or without their add-on resource, Writing Aids. K-Mom, which means you can use it with any grade level child, AND it teaches Mom- you can teach all your children the topics listed above at THEIR level but with the same topics.
It provides resources that have been read and tested, not just a random booklist that might fulfill the objectives of the week's study. They also provide tests/quizzes through an add-on called Evaluations as well as other great add-ons like Map Aids and Pop Quiz (for the spouse that is not teaching).
We love it!
