my 7th grade ds has done Rod and Staff grammar since about 2nd or 3rd grade (can't remember when we started right now..) anyway...this year is the first year we haven't done any grammar... He's been doing Vocab Vine, Elementary Greek, Spelling Workout (the last book)... I was planning on getting Our Mother Tongue and going through it over the rest of this year and 8th grade or starting in in 8th and doing it over 8th and 9th... does this sound like a good idea? I just looked a little bit at Analytical Grammar...not much.. but it looks good. he's pretty strong in grammar but it sure is easy to forget.. I thought Our Mother Tongue would be good review at the beginning of the book and it does seem to get into the harder stuff as well. Any thoughts on this? Anyone use OMT?

Are you referring to the new Our Mother Tongue by Nancy Wilson, put out by Canon Press, or the old Our Mother Tongue, which is like Harvey's.

Both Veritas Press and The Latin-Centered Curriculum recommend the Nancy Wilson book for 8th graders. It would be good as a review and would help to find any gaps for those who've been using Latin instruction to teach grammar. I think it looks like a solid program and probably won't take that much time to go through.

If you are talking about the other grammar book. That is probably overkill.

Hope that helps.

One more thing. I was going to use Analytical Grammar but decided to go with Our Mother Tongue instead. I haven't started it yet, but I like the looks of the samples. If it is relevant at all, I was a grammar teacher and an editor at a publishing house. I think both of these programs are good, so I decided to start with the cheaper one and see if that gets the job done.

will you let me know what you think as you do it? this is where I'm leaning. Will you do more grammar in high school after this book?

Tina,

It will likely be one or two school years before I use the book formally. I don't plan to do any formal grammar in high school either. I teach grammar through Latin and Writing, explaining concepts as they come up naturally. I did go through JAG last summer with ds10 so that he could learn diagramming in preparation for CW Homer. I'll do Our Mother Tongue in 7th or 8th to firm up any gaps and I'll continue to teach in context as needed after that, but I won't continue with a formal program in high school.

Sorry I can't be more help.
